For those who are interested and have been following The World Travels
Of John Atkinson (soon to be a made-for-tv movie of the month), I got
a msg from his brother, Jason, over the weekend:
"This is from his brother. I ran across your site. John is stationed in Ft.
Hood Texas and is currently deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, with the 4th
ID."
Just fyi.

Please pass on our thanks, and tell him every reported causality gives us a
personal scare on top of our general regrets, and gratitude for an
incalculable sacrifice, to yet another US family. So, any updates will bring
double appreciation.

Tikrit? Well, he was complaining about being out of it at the start...

Problem is he's not using his Bridge much. I'm sure it'd be nice to plop it
down on some house belonging to the current insurgents however.
as of about an hour ago, JohnA is scheduled to arrive at Baltimore

Heh. "House clearing"
I sent a note to the list about this a week or so ago, but forgot to change
the subject line so it came up as "re GZG Digest #..." and I guess no one read
it.
Jon isn't running a bridge any more. He's assigned to a line engineer squad,
"going on raids, blowing up Iraqi ammo dumps, and pulling a lot of guard
duty..."

I read it, and thought I thanked you for the update instead of just John's
brother via Indy. Insert proper '...move along.' comment.
We're just amused at the 'waste of trained personnel'... ;->=
Please note proper tongue-in-cheek.

I wonder if he likes or hates that. He's a Sgt so he's ordering a bunch of
squaddies around. Hmm, probably hates it, especially since he has to let them
do the hard work and do the NCO thing.
Hi everyone,
Further to the John Atkinson whereabouts discussion, I have a bit more info. I
was chatting (via email) with John, and asked him if I could relay his current
plans.
He has leave from November 12th:
"I'm in Kuwait now. I fly to the US and will be in Virginia by the 13th, and
will have to start travel back on the 29th. Regarding book list... I have very
limited luggage space. I'll let you know what on the list I can find myself
and mail to myself, but there may be some (the Glen Cook stuff) that may
require looking in a lot of used book stores across the continent. Haha."
And he was indeed working in an engineer line unit up near Tikrit (no bridge).
The book list he mentioned - I asked him if there was anything he was
short of over there that I might be able to do something about, and he
responded "good books". He sent me a wishlist of books, but then I started
hearing about this leave, so I didn't do anything about the book list. He'll
let me know what he's got once his leave is done, and I'm going to try to
organize sending him some other stuff to keep him entertained while "over
there...". I'll pass on the amended wishlist to this list (....er, I didn't do
that on purpose...) and maybe some of us can organize sending him something.
So, one option since he has limited carry capacity would be to get him a
handheld computer, and some CDs of books. Once CD can hold a couple of dozen
novels. I have a friend with one who travels frequently. He takes it along to
read on the plane and in hotels because it's so much smaller and lighter than
even paperbacks.
Just a thought.:)

goes; the problem sounds to be finding OOP books on disk.
I know I'll be swinging by a couple of local used bookstores this afternoon to
see if there are ANY of Cook's, just to be ready when the list shows. These
he'd prolly have to take in cellulose version.

Is Cook published by Baen? If so, I imagine Baen would be willing to get them
in electronic format.
Tor for the most part, and they haven't done anything. Electronic rights
to Glen Cook (especially Dread Empire) is on my post-lottery shopping
list.
I'd be willing to hit the Baen free library tomorrow and burn a DVD full
of books if a mailing address is available.

If it's any help, the hardcover of "War of Honor" has a CD with the entire
Honor Harrington series to date (including the 3 anthologies).

I did... (wait for it) in a copy I bought at discount sale...
Someday when I'm cleaning the office, again, I'll find it. Otherwise, I'd
offer to dupe it straight for John.
Still haven't found, but haven't given up on, the Glen Cook books. Thanks,
Brendan, for mentioning the publisher Tor.

I have no idea if he has a PC available that regularly - I know he told
me that getting access to the internet involves standing in line for an hour
and then paying $3 for an hour's access, assuming he has the free time to
start with...
Electronic format is a good idea - certainly would make it a lot easier
to
carry lots of books around - but I'm pretty sure he's talking about
"real" books as something he can carry around with him, doesn't need
batteries, won't get affected by dust, can loan to friends, and for that
matter can drop if necessary without worrying about the expense of a handheld
computer hitting the dirt and breaking, if he has to stop reading in a
hurry...
Good thoughts though!
if were taκing about actual paper books, i should do my share. After all, i
liue in the same state as powells.

He has to run into someone with regular PC access. He can always use access to
the disk(s) as a trade good. He'll want the MAME DVD eventually anyway.
