Unfortunately, I deleted the other messages in this thread, so I don't know if
these have been suggested:
Scimitar (perhaps for a fighter or light ship) Prophet (for a really heavy
ship)
"Prophet-class superdreadnought"...I like the sound of that, but what do
you name them besides Mohammed/Mehmet/etc.? Of course, there's probably
only one per fleet, but still.
Of the ones that were mentioned that I remember I like Jihad, Muhajadeen
(sp?), and Saladin. I'd stay away from the Koran. What do people think about
using titles (Sultan, Sharif, Mullah, etc.)?
I can already see a fleet of these in my mind's eye....green, with white
crescent wings and white script on the sides.

I was thinking of this, too. But how about the more traditional "shamshir"?
Time to have a look at my Compendium of Arms & Armor for more names.
> "Prophet-class superdreadnought"...I like the sound of
Well, IIRC the Muslims recognize Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, John the
Baptist, and Jesus as prophets too, but I don't think I'd do that either.
a few historical names
AssarI-Ttewfik
Lutfi Djelil These were names of Turkish ships

But the Islamic Federation was under Saudi hegemony, not Turkish, so names
should be Arabic, not Turkish. Okay, maybe a few Turks in there, but mostly
not.

OK, we seem to want to avoid all the religious ones (I personally think that's
overly cautious, as politics, religion, warfare, and culture are darn near
inseparable in the Middle East), how about some ancient Arabian ones?
Scheherazade and Djinn-class sound nice. Aladdin and Ali Baba don't
sound intimidating enough, but I'm sure there are many other names in the 1001
Arabian Nights that could be appropriate. Or Khadulu for the Lovecraft fans.
> From Jane's Fighting Ships, 1989-90, under Iraq,
Lupo class - Hittin, Thi Qar, Al Qadisiya, Al Yarmouk
Assad class - Mussa ben Nussair, Tariq Ibn Ziad, Khalid Ibn Al Walid,
Saad ibn Abi Waccade, Salah Ad Deen Al Ayoori
and other names like Ibn Khaldoum Al Adrisi Atika Jawada
Jane's can be an excellent source, but when a nation usually buys (rather than
building) ships, you get few class names.
Under the Saudis,
Badr Al Yarmook Hitteen Tabuk Madina Hofouf Abha Taif Al Siddiq Al Farouq etc.

respectively) Bayandor Class: Bayandor, Naghdi

Mansoor, Najah
[Bushra is the first name of my sister-in-law, Mansoor that of my
mother-in-law. Perhaps I should just list out the first names of my
in-laws
and we can select ships classes from there ... ;-)]
Dhofar Class: Dhofar, Al Sharqiyah, Al Bat'nah, Mussandam
UAE:
Kartal Class: Denizkusu, Atmaca, Sahin, Kartal, Peliken, Albatros, Simsek,
Kasirga
We musn't forget the Pakistani Navy, one of the larger Islamic countries in
the world and current users of the green / white crescent flag. Sadly
the reference book I have to hand doesn't cover any Pakistani ships.
I shoulda tried compiling a list of everyone's suggestions for IF ship names,
but I didn't, so if there's any overlap, my apologies.
I dug up some Arabic star names that one might consider for ship class names
and offer them here:
Kalb al 'Akrab ("Heart of the Scorpion" - Antares, main star in
Scorpius)
Al Shaulah ("The Sting[er]" - Shaula, 'stinger' star in Scorpius)
Paha (Persian for "The Follower" - Aldebaran, main star in Taurus)
Al Haur or Al Hawar ("The White of the Eye" or "Bright Eye" - Alioth,
star in the Big Dipper)
Malikiyy ("The Kingly One" - Regulus, main star in Leo)
Al Nasr al Waki ("The Swooping Eagle" - Vega, main star in Lyra)
Dilgan (Babylonian for "Messenger of Light" - possible reference to
Vega)
Just some more ideas.

I don't think that we have to avoid all the religious names, just make sure
that we aren't using it the wrong way (for example, check out the flak over
naming of SSN 705 USS City of Corpus Christi). If there is an historical
precedent of the name being used in the real world, I wouldn't see a problem
with using it in the game.
There is a list of possible Farsi name for ships at
http://www.persian.com
under the 'Boy's Names' and 'Girl's Names' links, with pronunciation guide and
english meanings.

If you're determined to name your IF ships after prophets, any Old
Testament prophet will do. I can't see a Saudi-style govt. using that
sort of naming system, though.
My suggestions for IF class names, or just names:
-Hattin (Crusades Battle of the Horns of...)
-any of the other Islamic victories, Crusader or any other time.
-any Islamic city, past or future. Name one 'Cordova', and get right up
the nose of the FSE...:>
Oh, and a Jihad-class ship should properly be 'lesser jihad'- eg war.
Greater jihad is supposed to be internal stuff - soul and perfection of
one's own Islam. Not that you'd know, from the actions of 'Islamic'
governments here & now... I can't remember the Arabic for 'lesser jihad',
though. Anyone?
