OK, got in yesterday at about 0700 EST. All body parts still attached and in
working order. I'll be in Virginia for two weeks, leaving on the 29th.
Much amused by the list archives... Seems I still account for a hefty
percentage of list traffic even when gone.
Muahahaha.
Baltimore crowd: E-mail me with a place and time to
go blow up some starships, but I'll need some loaner ships.
While looking for how-to-sign-up directions, I got
sidetracked by exploring stargrunt.ca, your handy
one-stop SGII reference page (even if those Canadians
havn't added anything but pretty pictures since 18 Dec 2002) and I noticed
that one of the
planned-not-executed items in the mailing list info is
a segment for bios of mailing list regulars (or at least people newbies should
be warned about). It might be amusing for someone to volunteer to collect
and coallate 'em, html-ize 'em, and maybe we could
persuade them lazy bums to put it up.:)
In that vein, and realizing there are probably some newbies wondering "who the
heck is this loon and why has his name been in the subject of half my mailing
list traffic for the past week," I submit mine:
NB: This is probably a bad idea, and will generate a
flood of stuff off-topic like a mike-foxtrot. So let
me say that it would be best if we could get a
volunteer to collect 'em via regular e-mail, not just
a bunch of folks posting 'em to the list. I'd volunteer, but I suck at HTML
and besides, I'll be way, way too drunk.
John M. Atkinson: John is a US Army Combat Engineer with at least four
personalities (one of whom spends
much time in the closet), obsessive-compulsive
disorder, incipent alcoholism, and other undisclosed mental problems. Hobbies
include posting outrageous
stuff on the GZG-List, then giggling maniacally.
Assume nothing he posts is completely serious unless it is on the topic of
combat engineering (and then
it's 50/50). True loyalty is to the Roman (Not
Byzantine, Dammit!) Empire and he occasionally posts as the Hand of the Sole
Rightful Autocrat of Man.
Welcome back.

Welcome back John, glad you made it.

Welcome back. Been wondering about you from the safety of the CNN Building in
Atlanta.
If you can, pick up a copy of There will be Dragons. It's right up your ally.
Roman Legions and Building things and stuff, you'll probably like anything
else of Ringo's. Let me know if you want a signed copy, I'll bug John about
one next time I see him. Also, you might also like 1633 (if you've not ready
it yet).
Any chance you've seen any WWII British kit in Iraq? I suppose they had lots
of it from the post colonial days, but they probably threw it all away and
swapped it for crap Russian web gear.

We're doomed.
Hiya folks,
John proposes that we do what we've done once or twice in the past and speak
up with bios for list regulars. I have vague memories of someone doing that
before, and even compiling a bunch of photograps of some of
us...
TomB was keen on this, way back, though that project got sidetracked and he is
awfully busy at the moment with some heavy RealLife issues...
I'll commit to putting it up on stargrunt.ca, in the pages dedicated to the
list, so anyone who wants can send me a bio at adrian@stargrunt.ca. If there
are sufficient submissions to make it worth while (ie I'm not going
to put up a "Warning - watch out for John A." page, though that would be
amusing), I'll get it done - though no promises when...
There might even be some in the archives, if someone wants to hunt for
them...?

Ahhh, the beginnings of greatness.:)

I love Ringo's stuff. Found 1633 in the DSE PX last month, much cool. Signed
copy would be cool, but don't send it to Iraq. Would get trashed.

Nah, they had to swap for stuff that can accept AK magazines.

Indeed! Welcome back, glad you haven't fallen victim to current US foreign
policy, and all that...

Nah, it's been too quiet around here anyway. I'll post mine tomorrow.

Have fun! Fastest way I know to get and stay stinking drunk is

Fame is such a burden, LOL! Welcome back home.
Off list at wilsong@nima.mil, let me know if there is anything I can try and
get to you from work even if it isn't my part of the world. They are finally
dropping "Mapping" from our name as we admit the obvious.

You'll notice a hefty percentage of that hefty percentage was concern that
you'd get your a** blown off; thanks for avoiding that. Keep up the good work!
It seems that Starfishers is the same Glen Cook you seek, though, it would
appear, a fairly early work.
When you get around to figuring out what you need to take back, let me know if
you need it.

HOT DAMN!
GOOD TO SEE Y'ALL ARE SAFE AND SOUND AND BACK IN THE USA, JOHN!
HAVE A MOST EXCELLENT TWO WEEKS OF R&R, JOHN.
AND WHEN Y'ALL GO BACK TO SHITVILLE, BE CAREFUL AND COME BACK SAFE AND SOUND
AGAIN!
DAWGIE, GLAD TO SEE JOHN BACK SAFE AND SOUND...
I'll add in my welcome back for your R&R to John too! My thanks goes to you
and all the service personnel for the sacrifices you are making and danger you
continue to face on our behalf.
Best wishes,
Kevin
I'd love to add my welcome to all the others, and also my praise of all our
servicemembers overseas, but I'm uncomfortable offering lip service since I'll
never be able to offer to them anything worth nearly as much as what they
offer and give for me. But for what it's worth, this Tanksgiving when we're
around the table sharing the things that inspire our gratitude, I'll raise my
glass and toast The Full Metal A and his brthren.
Welcome back, John!
The world and Iraq is a better place due to you and your fellow soldiers
efforts.
Thank you!
