OK, using the info from your other post, the BB Steve has 14 6arc pulsers for
a total of 56 mass. The BB Issuc has 8 Scatterguns, 4 K1 guns and 2 K6 guns,
for a total of 44 mass, 78.5% of the BB Steve. With the mass difference and
the lower thrust giving him more weapons.
Now the BB Steve fires all 56 mass of weapons at the BB Issuc as it doesn't
have any dedicated point defense weapons. BB Issuc on the other hand returns
fire with only the 2 K6 guns, 28 mass, because the Scatterguns are out of
range and the K1s are firing at another target.
BB Steve then rolls very well with TWICE the weapon mass. Yup, BB Issuc would
be toast after that exchange.
---------------------------------
I didn't fire the class-1 rail guns at Steve's BB as it was
wasting shots. The class-6s would pretty much ignore
his ship's massive armor belt and be doing thresholds while the 1s would be
doing nothing. The escorts has little armor, and those 4 hits did wipe out the
armor and did
1 hull (3 armor total). The class-1s can be thresholding
an escort instead of wasting fire on lots of armor; if my ship had lived long
enough for more shots.
I knew the odds were stacked against me, but they turned out to be
overwhelmingly stacked against me. This is leading to my frustration.
I know about the loss is power with the rail guns with the larger classes; I
use a spreadsheet to design ships
and can see the numbers. I like the class-6s and
class-5s, but detest the class-2s. I'd rather have
more class-1s than class-2s. But there is something
so satisfying WHEN a class-6 hits and does double
damage.:)
You want to know how Steve rolls? In a game tonight, he rolled 12 "beam" dice
(pulsers). One die was a 3,
the rest were 4+ against an unscreened target.
Then he did it again on a later turn. He did have a
few not-so-good rolls, but nothing to offset those
particular two salvoes.

Dice rolling is a pain ;-/
Neil McGurk demonstrated this when we played out the 80 ship battle we had
some weeks ago at TravellerCon.
His side failed to win initiative and had a problem with rolling anything
above 4 on a D6....
I think he fired 7 spinal mounts with a 66%+ chance to hit and only
managed to land 3, of which only 2 penetrated defenses...
Ouch...

However, keep in mind that Steve's weapons were 6-arc whereas nearly
two-thirds of Glen's weapon Mass consisted of 1-arc weapons. Steve paid
a lot of extra Mass for all those fire arcs, so the difference in weapon Mass
wasn't quite as significant as it could've been with other weapon
combinations.
OTOH, Steve's weapons were all screen-degradable whereas Glen's were
screen-skipping ones, and neither of them had any screens... so the
points
Glen spent on screen-skipping ability for his weapons were wasted.

Um... according to your previous posts, that "massive armour belt" started the
battle consisting of 6 armour boxes, and had already lost some boxes
prior to the salvo we're discussing here. If the escort had 3 armour boxes
left, you've made it sound very much as if the BB would've had no more than
this to less than to stop the K1s with...

We have come to term this the "Teske Field" effect. Aaron Teske, lister here
(but mostly lurker if he's still on due to his workloads) has the uncanny
ability to roll very high when he needs to. This was first recognized in the
early playtest periods of FB1. I was his opponent, and it hurt repeatedly and
over and over again (was that enough redundancy
to cover it all? ;-) when he would fire beam dice at me and
roll lots of 5s and 6s (and repeat 6s on rerolls), whereas I could throw
similar amounts of dice and roll 1s, 2s, and 3s primarily (and this became
known as the "Kochte Effect", alas).

I don't think Oerjan intended any insult whatsoever. I don't like to admit it
(who does, really?), but I'm not as good a tactician as compared to Noam, or
Aaron, or Oerjan, on the list. It hurts, but it's reality. I just try to hold
my own when going up against
them. ;-)
Also, another thought, you mentioned having higher thrust ships
with single-arc weapons vs Steve's lower-thrust ships with multi-
arc weapons. Doesn't matter running rings around someone if they can shoot you
from any angle you are but you need to centerline them in order to deal damage
to them.
One thought is to redesign your ships in an off-axis configuration.
Instead of facing your guns (whatever they are) forward, face them
to an offside arc, THEN run rings around Steve! ;-) Noam did that
to me with his NI once a couple years ago. Annoying, it was. ;-)
