Subject: Hunter MMRAV SG2 Conversion to DS2

I was trying to convert the Hunter FV703 MMRAV from the listing in Stargrunt
II (p. 68) to Dirtside II.

However, the Hunter listed that it has a HKP/2. DS2 states that the
minimum size for HKP is 3. What is the correct way to handle this?
 1) Use a MDC/2
 2) Adjust DS2 to allow HKP/2
3) Other?

Also it lists that it has Decoy launchers and Smoke launchers. What would be
the DS2 cost and space requirment for these items. What range would the smoke
launchers have? If you launch a drone, can you use it to spot for artillery?

I would like player input as well as a response from Jon Tuffley or Mike
Elliott.

Thanks in advance,

I know the smoke launchers are standard equipment in DS2 (as one of the
available actions is to launch smoke & all vehicles can do this).
Instead of a HKP/2, the most suitable weapon would actually be a HVC/2,
as that's the weapon progression followed (the HKP is a more powerful version
of HVC). The decoy launchers might be considered part of the DS2 LAD system
which can be fitted to vehicles. I don't recall seeing any option is SG2 for
any sort of LAD on vehicles.

I would say that any of the above would be suitable. I'm not familiar with the
SGII rules, so I'm not exactly sure how the two HKPs relate to one another.
Personally, I would likely go with 1), since it wouldn't require changing the
DSII rules.

I would class decoy launchers in with an increased stealth rating. The smoke
launchers already exist. All vehicles can deploy smoke directly in front of
themselves every turn by using their combat action to do so. The smoke is
included in the cost of the vehicle. As for spotting for artillery, I would
say no, on the grounds that a decoy's purpose is to draw attention away from
the intended target. I suppose that you could design a small drone vehicle to
be used to call down artillery, but it wouldn't be useful as a decoy as well.
Example: FMTD (Fire Mission Targeting Drone) Size 1 VTOL, armour 0, SUP ECM,
Carries "artillery observer" element.
Cost: 107 (say -7 points for not having an APSW to make it an even 100)

Go for an HKP/2.
We have some house rules that basically allow us to ignore some of the
restrictions along these lines. Because the DS2 points system is algorithmic
rather than setting fixed points values for given weapon systems, it just
continues to work even if you go outside its bounds. The combat system will
also just work (this rule system just gets
better the deeper you look into it). By lifting some if the minimum /
maximum size restrictions you can also have previously prohibited vehicles
such as size 2 and 3 combat walkers (I never understood why you couldn't have
these in the first place). The beauty of the way DS2 works is that you can do
this without having to invent any
special house rules for your new, 'illegal' system - as long as your
opponent agrees to you using a system outside the parameters in the rules,
their can be no dispute about its cost and effectiveness. One rule we don't
allow to be broken is the 'maximum armour for a vehicle
is the same as its class' one (jeeps with armour-5, anyone ?).

You could consider the decoys / smoke discharges to be a form of PDS ?

True enough. Just like you can simulate offense-heavy genres by varying
the restrictions on weapon size or genres with 'true' grav vehicles (the kind
that can fly and handle their own orbital insertions) by removing the armor
restrictions on VTOLs.

(Just out of curiousity, has anyone experimented with allowing heavier armor
for aerospace vehicles?)

Actually the HVC is size 3 to 5 only as well. It's RFAC at 1 and 2 then HVC
and HKP at 3 upwards.

Personally I would use an HKP/3

After all the MMRAV is size 3.
That's 9 for the HKP/3
4 for the GMS/H.
Leaving two for a LAD or basic PDS.

Unless you wanted some infantry as well.
