Well I too have a major NSL fleet so I guess that from that I am a supporter

Free Guinness? Got all my support then. No way they'd ever join the fascist
NAC. I actually have a few NAC ships that I intend to paint up as Irish
Mercernaries that I've never got around to painting, but now I just might. I
even have a few tiny guinness pictures that I could put on them.

As I recall, Galloglaich were supposed to get 3 bullocks a quarter, one being
pay and the other 2 food! My Scottish Socialist Republic ships are
mid-green, with a 2-letter ID code derived from the name, and the larger
vessels bear the old Scottish naval ensign (yellow sun rising from a blue and
white sea into a red sky). I'm now scraping the cash together for a GZG
order- probably ESU, definitely some GF-range!

KR mentioning asking Himself for his "papal blessing" made me think, how about
the Papal States as a minor player? Probably a core of (crimson?) FSE ships,
plus mercenaries from all over the place. I'm thinking along the lines of the
splendidly terrible old BBC series "The Borgias" (Remember Adolfo Celi ploting
to make people "deh Kink of Nipples"?).

Oh dear...Well I doubt we'd have anymore than a few light cruisers in this
fleet. A few celtic symbols might be more appropriate. Of ourse all payment
for these mercenaries would have to be in liquid form. I must admit I always
tought Ireland would probably be more likely to be FSE (European Union) than
NAC. Not that that should stop anyone.

I was thinking that like the Dutch, the Irish took advantage of the
collapse of the old EU to re-assert total independance. There are some
historical ties between Ireland and France, but I don't know how much
those ties will matter in the 21st/22nd Centuries. (I don't know how
much they matter now, for that matter...)

As for Irish space vessel insignia: Celtic is cool, and alot of the other
ideas are pretty silly for warships (Guiness logos, shamrocks, etc). Maybe
for Irish-registered commercial vessels, but warships? I mentioned the
golden harp as an insignia, but I'm not sure.

Any actual Irish out on the list want to comment? Just my $.02...

In my background I've been using a gov't called the Celtic League. They are
basically several Scottish and Irish settled planets who've broken away from
the NAC, and 1 or 2 breakaway FSE planets, mostly of Gallic or Galitian
descent. Their Fleet is rather small, with the biggest ship being a surplus
NSL battlecruiser, most of the rest of the fleet being smaller, and very much
homegrown.

Hard to say. From the current perspective the European Union provides a means
for Ireland to differentiate itself from the the UK. Having been regarded as
part of the UK for so long theres been a need to reassert our independence. It
can get rather annoying to go to far off places and try to explain that we're
NOT English. Ireland is rather Europhile. Not really suprising considering how
much money has been pumped into the country by the EU over the years. It seems
to have paid off at least. Thats why I would think that Ireland is more likely
to be part of the FSE if only to keep the NAC out. Although its more likely to
be independent.

> There are some historical ties between Ireland and France, but I don't

Not a huge amount of links left really. General Sarsfield and the Wild geese
(a mercenary company, although mercenary perhaps is the wrong term) fought for
the French. There were Irish troops (from France) fighting with the Scots at
Culloden I think. The French dislike us as much as they do anyone else now
though.

Perhaps. Its certainly used on the coinage. I'm amused by the
Guinness logo idea for merchants though.

Well thats my penneys worth. Any other small power ideas? The Nordic countries
perhaps?

And as a matter of interest does anyone have an idea as to how many colonised
planets there are? Or how far the galaxy has been explored?

Yes it would seem appropriate. Don't forget the Welsh though. Well North Wales
anyhow. They're Celts too! The Gauls eh? I can see it
now Asterix class Q-ships. They look harmless but pack a big punch.

IIRC, Ogre Miniatures has photos of a Papal States "Swiss Guard" ogre, painted
in yellow and purple stripes...

One is tempted to ask if the Scottish-Irish league would be a
Catholic or Protestant league...

Or Tony Curtis as Ivanhoe? Who can forget the immortal line: "I go to claim da
kingdom of my fadda" (thick Brooklyn accent here!).

Well hopefully that won't be such an issue then. Maybe we'll all have reverted
to paganism by then. Funny but it doesn't seem to be an issue anywhere but up
north. And parts of Scotland when theres a football match on.

I wonder if Luxembourg will have a fleet by then? Or the Swiss?

The Swiss? Maybe. They'll still be armed to the teeth, probably, still
independant, bankers for anyone...maybe a few colonies, or a large
ex-pat
community spread thru space...

What about the Red Cross? Hospital ships helping struggling colonies, running
the inevitable refugee camps, supervising PoW stuff, all the usual, but in an
interstellar enviroment like everything else? I can see gleaming white
spaceships with big red crosses on the side being the Swiss' main presence in
space.

And Luxembourg (and Belgium) would probably be FSE member states, albiet minor
ones, well dominated by France.

The destruction of Belgium between the FSE and the Dutch state sounds
likely -- could be a cause of conflict between the Dutch and the FSE.

The language barrier/difference is noticable even to a visitor (me) who
speaks little french and no dutch and who was there only three days total
-- EVERYTHING changes when you cross the French/dutch line -- its like
its already two countries, or parts of different countries.

In which case the Iper FSE ship will indeed have to have a different class
- or become the first model in the Dutch line from GZG...
