FYI, Harpoon is now in it's 4th version. It has consistently evolved and
improved, and is now, IMHO, far superior to any other modern naval simulation
(including Warship Commander, which I have played but which is
now woefully out-of-date.). Harpoon 4 for the computer is due out
shortly I understand, at least accroding to my last conversations with Larry
and Chris (Carlsen). I'll tell Larry you liked his books when I see him at
HISTORICON<g>.

Agreed as to out-of-date. And the expansion to cover Subs was of a
lesser quality. But the last ed of Harpoon I saw still wasn't up to the same
standard *as a simulation* though may be a superior game.
You really need a ref or computer moderation though. Limited Intelligence is
what it's all about - otherwise it's an exercise in numbers to see how
many of your ASMs get through his defences, and how many of his get through
yours.

I'd be interested.
Hands up all chief designers of naval combat systems on the list. Anyone else
but me?
FWIW I had a key role to play in the STN-Atlas COSYS system (basically
the chief technical architect of the software, and assistant architect for the
system as a whole), and a relatively minor role in the ISUS-90 submarine
combat system (head projectwide software guru, interprocessor comms TL, and
Audio ie processing the sigs to something an operator can hear).
Alas, although I know some of the actual performance figures rather than the
ones in the games, "If told you, they'd have to shoot me. Then you." Plus
there's still a lot of uncertainty due to environmental conditions,
MTTBF/MTTR
etc. Don't underestimate the latter, it can dominate the tactical situation,

4TH VERSION!!??!! Wow!!! Last time I saw it was when the original Mech Warrior
came out. That was... What? Over 10 years ago?!!??
I was looking to download that older version of the game. The newer games
coming out now days has gotten too many bells & whistles for me. Cut the great
screen shots, over abundance of sound, and film clips... I'd still have a
great time with the game (example John Madden's Football).
Any idea when the 4th edition Harpoon is going to come out?
Please do tell Larry that he has a great fan that loves his books!!!
Hi,
While you are waiting for v4, a lad named Jesse Spears can sell you the most
recent version of Harpoon III (3.4.11), which runs on Mac, Mac OS X and
Windows.
http://www.harpoon3.com/ (for the mac versions)
http://www.navalwarfare.org/ (for the PC version)
BTW, I wouldn't hold your breath for v4. It has been in development
since 1997 (by SSI - remember them?)
Cheers, Tony Christney

There's a board for Harpoon 4 at www.simhq.com. Postings there indicate that
we should see it by the end of the year.

You're not the only one. :-)
Larry's Ghost Writer is a good friend of mine, I'll pass on the kudos.

Commodore 64...

TACTICOS, mainly.

Not going to comment on that;)
Cheers,

I'm not commenting either. Those who do work on naval systems are under tight
security arrangements. I'm sure that things won't change in the GZG universe.

Oh this has nothing to do with military security, just something very
commercially embaressing. Quite funny too, in a cynical kind of way.

True.
