Congratulations on your centennial!

It may have been the first time a referendum created a nation, but not the
first time that a ballot and negotiated settlement created a nation. Canada
beat you to THAT by 33 and a half years. *S* (While Canada didn't have a
referendum for Confederation, the elections leading up to Confederation
resulted in pro-Confederation politicians getting voted in, and they
--in turn
-- sent delegates to Britain. )

But I didn't realize that Australia was created by plebecite! Way cool. Once
again, congratulations!

You know you have to watch that kind of talk; you'll get endless 'well, it's
only cuz the (Irish, 'mericans, Indians, et al) softened the Brits up
first.' ;->=

Heard of your centennial just this morning on public radio. I'm ashamed at
failing to know before. I gather our president spoke with the warm words I
know we, your fellow colonials, share.

Congrats!

Oh, yeah, greetings on the start of the new millenium! *heh heh*

Hopefully your country has started a growing trend (but the professional cynic
my occupation requires me to be doubts it. But maybe I can be righteously
wrong this time <grin>.

The best third, I assume? <grin>

Ditto to those in Oz, but also, BTW, a Happy 200th Birthday to the United
Kingdom..... ;-)

Ummm... huh? *L*

James VI of Scotland became James I of England, thus uniting the crowns, in
1603. But it wasn't until 1707 that the Act of Union made it "official".

So what happened in 1801???
