Vinegar has yet more uses. This one comes from a model railway website. Add
some wire wool to cheap vinegar and leave it for a while. When you paint this
solution onto wood, balsa anyway, it gives it a very nice greyish colour that
is great for weathered wood. Unfortunately I left the wire wool in mine and it
would stain the wood a darker brown colour, interesting but not as useful. Â

Here's some more info on acetic acid stains. They're well known in woodworking
circles.
