I have made up two 18" measuring sticks, divided into 3×6" parts - red,
yellow and green. They look fantastic and make me realise how small my table
is (but it should be 8×6' by the weekend!).

I am tempted to make a portable version - 3 12" lengths of brass rod
with smaller diameter rod inside so they fit together - I wonder how
easy it would be to put a thread on them? If paint does not hold I suppose I
could use engineers' blue to colour either the end ones or the middle ones.
Maybe I should stick with a tape measure...

BTW what table sizes does everyone use? What is 'normal' or rather what
is the mean table size? Is the US/UK size split real?

I assume most people either use an existing table (dinning / table
tennis) or have made something using standard size sheet material from the
hardware store.

Although sizes are metric now in the EU standard hardware sheet material comes
in the usual 4'x2' (120 x 60cm) 6'x3' (180 x 90 cm) 8'x4'(240 x 120 cm) sizes.
I have a 4'x6' (120 x 180 cm) table made from three pieces of 4'x2' MDF
dowelled together along the long edge. This fits over the dining table.

On material MDF/hardboard is heavy but cheap.
Ply is lighter and stronger but generally costs more.
Chipboard/particle board is heavy and weak and not recommended.

Maybe an old telescopic ariel from a radio would
work here. These can be 2 - 3ft long, you would
have to engrave the range bands on the chrome.

I don't think threading thin brass tube is going to be durable enough.

I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing. Originally, I made range
sticks with 4' of dowel. Nice, but the wood started slightly warped (and it's
near impossible to find a straight piece) and got worse over time. Now I'm
making the same sticks out of aluminum tubing (it's lighter than brass). My
suggestion would be to prime the rod first with
auto primer and then spray-paint on the range colors. Just use tape to
mask the ranges you've already painted.

I enjoy playing on a 4'x6' table. It's a good size for reaching minis and
being able to take in the whole battle. Though the occasional game of FT on a
6'x8' table is fun due to the extra maneuvering room.
