Okay, I asked potential players about ideas for te terrain, and what I got was
a few suggestins on the kinds of squads they're likely to play (I'm assuming
Tony intended the Sumatran Rats as his squad, not as a wandering monster).

So I'm opening it up to suggestions from people who are NOT going to be
playing. What would *you* like for the terrain to include? Teleporters,
one-way doors, sinkholes, ice sheets...you're not going to have to play
on it, so indulge yourself and make a suggestion...

I'm partial to cave-to-separate underground board of twisty passages,
but that may not fit in with your plans...

If you have some available a few of the Robot Rally boards would be pretty
interesting. Lots of conveyor belts, lasers, pits, smashers etc...

Man eating plants are always fun. But for added excitement let them move D6"
or more a turn. "Sir... the forest just tried to sneak up on us" "Sgt Jensen I
told you to stop smoking that local plant. Now get back to shooting those damn
sheep! How exactly are they able to hold and fire those guns anyway?"

Have you ever heard of the Bog of eternal stench from the movie Labyrinth?

Actually, plain grass, with the occasional gopher hole to twist your ankle in
sounds like it would be a change. Sure, body count would be high, but,
isn't that the point anyway? (8-)

Weren't all of the above actually in the movie "The Princess Bride"? Or I
could be wrong again of course...

You only think I guessed wrong - that's what's so funny. I switched
glasses when your back was turned. Ha-ha, you fool. You fell victim to
one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved
in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go
in against a Sicilian, when *death* is on the line.". Hahahahahah.

Oh yup, I was just thinking of other famous bits of fantasy terrain that
existed out there. (8-)

Aside from using RoboRally tiles (already suggested), I have three other
ideas.

The first is a simple idea but might take alot of terrain: make the table into
a big box canyon/valley (eg w/ geohex). The two long table edges are
sloped up
10-12 levels each, as is one short edge. No other cover. So forces are
fighting across a valley without cover other than the military edge of their
slope (see WW2 Italian Campaign, Korean War, or Afghanistan for similar
situations). Victory conditions force players to make their way to the valley
floor. I can send you scans of the templates I use to cut geohex pieces if you
need.

Second idea is the inverse of the first: flat plain with a single large, high
feature in the middle. Imagine light infantry fighting around (and on) Ayer's
Rock. This situation actually occured in 2002 in Afghanistan during Operation
Anaconda.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/afghanistan/shahi-khot.htm

The third idea uses a lot less terrain (easier to build), but is a more
complex concept: A network of platforms, bridges, and ramps (made out of
foamboard) like the Ogier Ways from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. Platforms
are large enough for a squad to spread out, but ramps and bridges are only 1
or 2 figures wide. No cover from those above, military edge cover from those
below. If
Armhold Musclehugger/Artie Swartzenbigger brings his man-pack Plasma/5,
you can blast platforms and bridges out from under your opponents. Victory
conditions force players to make their way to the lower platforms. The black
death cloud can show up to consume anyone who tarries on the upper platforms
(and also to consume any elder cthuli that appear:)).

Heh. The black death cloud may well *be* a shuggoth or some such.
