I've had it with these plastic stands. The plastic bases are okay because I
end up mounting them on a fender washer to lower the center of gravity, but
the plastic posts are for the birds. They break too easily.
So, I'm looking through the GZG online store. FT 004 does not seem suitable as
it uses a
plastic post. FT-003 is described as a "large
hex stand (metal)". How large is the hex base? Is the post metal?
FT-STAND-MET has a plastic base with metal post
for bigger ships. How large is the platic base?
Thanks.

have been cutting the large plastic posts down about 1/2 an inch, then
drilling a small small hole 1/4 inch down the post, and in the
miniature. Then pinning it together. Have not had the miniature of post stand
brake yet

I use two 7/8" fender washers glued inside those bases to lower the CG
and then use aluminum or brass tubing instead of the plastic posts.

Per comments from this list on April 17-18, 2005:
FT004 is a small metal base about 18mm across, plastic post FT003 is a large
metal base, 50mm diameter (42mm across flats) with a metal post. You can see
it in the pictures of the large ESU minis.

Dean's method is one of a couple posted here over the years for replacing the
plastic flight stands. It has the advantage of allowing you to easily remove
the ship from the stand, for safer transportation.
I saw Dean's ships at GenCon and the stands do look very well made. I believe
he has instructions on his web site.

My main problem is heat - because of the climate here.
If I leave my models in the car for as little as half an hour during summer,
the plastic stands look like abstract sculpture.
Simple, cheap metal stands would be a godsend to me. Just kits

The metal hex is about 2" (50mm) across; yes, the post is metal. We
supply these with most of the very large (BDN/SDN) ships.
> FT-STAND-MET has a plastic base with metal post
The same as the all-plastic stand, the metal post is a casting of the
plastic one and thus a direct replacement. If you're happy with the size of
the regular plastic stand, but simply want stronger posts, this is the way to
go. We supply these stands with all the
medium-sized ships (BC/BB size) .
