As far as the science of purring goes, purring is in the ear of the beholder.
Depending on how technical you want to get about purring then there is a whole
load of debate of which cats can purr. If you want technical a purr is one
both inhale and exhale, which means only small
felids (domestic cat, caracal, serval, ocelot etc) can purr - with the
puma being the largest of these species. If on the other hand you want to lob
in with the "it sounds like a purr so it is a purr whether its on inhale,
exhale or both" then at least a few large cats can, including the lion,
cheetah and tiger.

You wouldn't believe the vitriol that turns up in the literature on this
one. Heaven forbid we ever run into a feline-like alien species ;)
