This exchange has reminded me why one must be careful using present military
logic when discussing a fictional world with different restrictions and
parameters. As Beth has pointed out; adding Grav Tanks and Grav APCs to the
mix changes the impact of controlling roads. Or control of the space would
impact the information flow or many other differances one could think of. One
of the challenges of doing this kind
of article/story in a fictional future is one must make some assumptions
based on tech that does not exist now and thus draw conclusions that may or
may not make sense with present (modern) or past (WWII for example) military
doctrine.

Me, I think Beth has done a great job in her attempts to paint one possible
future situation. And to her point, one must accept that her fictional account
has to assume not all of our present thinking would work with the fictional
tech she has included (or GZG has included) in the background of the story.

Thanks for the fun and entertainment Beth!

parameters Beth specified, Daniel is right. However, in broader terms having
grav tanks and grav APCs makes the road net redundant only if one can move all
one's beans, bullets, and black oil via grav as well. It appears that the
Kra'vak can. I bet in human space, though (even in 2196), that stuff mostly
moves on wheels (or rails, where there are
any). Logistics is a harsh mistress.... ;-)

http://lists.csua.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lLetting the Kra'vak
sit in there and starve or just nuking the whole city is fine and dandy unless
you happen to be fighting for someone in charge who either does not want the
real estate irradiated becuase he plans on moving back in or has to otherwise
get on with his life so is in a hurry to mop up the last of the resistance.
Sound military logic or doctrine often (more likely most of the time) has to
take a back seat to various political issues or needs. Right or wrong, there's
no reason why that wouldn't stay the same in the future...

That's certainly how I see it - especially given the range of figs gzg
sells;)

That's what I was thinking too. There are some things that may change a lot in
the next few hundred years, but there are a whole bunch of base motivations
that don't seem to have changed in the last few thousand years so I can't see
changing in the next few thousand either.
