Subject: GZG Ontario (Toronto) Con - Call for Support

I've been talking to the GZG East guys, and we got talking about putting the
GZG con on the road. What was suggested was a GZG con in Ontario in the fall
(October).

So, what kind of interest would there be in a GZG convention in Toronto in
October? For geography sake, Toronto is about 5 hours from Detroit, 2.5 hours
from Buffalo, 10 hours from Chicago, 11 hours from Boston, 11 hours from
Washington, and 10 hours from New York. I'm not sure about Ohio, probably in
the 7 hour range. From Ottawa, it's about 15 minutes at the usual highway 401
speeds (that's a joke for the atlas impaired).

I'm looking for:

1) General interest. 2) Partners in crime from the T.O. area. 3) An idea of
when to hold the con. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second week in October; is
this a good time or a bad time?

Consider me ready, willing and able to help out, to help organize,
clean, whatever. (I gotta outdo Mark for pre-convention stress, you
know. (8-) )

Thanksgiving might be a bad time though, because of all the family stuff that
happens around then. (Also because the Americans don't
get the holiday, so there's no real advantage for them (8-) )

How about the 24th-25th i.e. last weekend in October? Gives people
time to recover from Canadian Thanksgiving, yet we avoid the Halloween rush...

Heh!

Actually this corresponds to our Columbus Day weekend. Now, granted, *I* don't
get it off automatically, but I'm sure others do.

Hey Allan,

I'd go to a GZG Con. I live in Toronto, and would be very interested in
meeting and gaming with other DSII players. Good chance to check out other
people's scenery and minis too.

Bad time. People are going to want to spend time with family, not at a con.

This Toronto convention sounds good except for 2 things 1.By that time my
company may have transferred me from Toronto to Ottawa (go figure)
2.Mid-October is the Council Fires Convention in Cambridge 1 hr. west
of Toronto and I don't know if I can swing to such trips together within a
couple of weeks.

Greetings!

Actually, there is quite a lot of GZG-gaming at the cons in
Toronto. At Pandemonium last January, Full Thrust and SG II was run
continuously for both days. Heck, 20mm Vietnam was run w/ GII rules on
Sunday...

This May, OrionCon will be having a number of SGII and FT events. In July,
Toronto Trek will have all of the GZG games represented.

Also, there has been 2 demo-days of SGII at the Sci-Fi cafe in
North York. Veeeery popular.

Laterish!

Cool. I haven't been to Panda in years because I was unimpressed with the way
it was run the last time out. Maybe I'll give it a shot next year.

> This May, OrionCon will be having a number of SGII and FT

I was wondering what that might be like. I think I'll drop by on the Saturday.

I'll probably be too busy preparing for GenCon to go, but it's a possibility.

Cool.

I'm finding that convention space in Toronto is expensive. The prices I'm
seeing are around $800 per room per night for hotel space. I still have some
alternate locations, however...

Howdy!

Yeah, Pande really bit back in '91-94. They have *really*
gotten their act together. The hotel they had it at this year was *great*.
Some FT was run, but SGII was run continuously (it's a big draw).

> > This May, OrionCon will be having a number of SGII and FT

I hope it's good....:)

> >In July, Toronto Trek will have all of the GZG games represented.

You should; it is a neat con. Lots of stuff to do.

> I'm finding that convention space in Toronto is expensive. The prices

We just piggy-back on existing cons. We've been running
miniatures events for about 10 years locally, with about 5 cons a year,
not including in-store demos.

Sadly, prices are very high. We tried putting together a con about 4 years
ago, but didn't have the money and organization. Kevin at Bushman Games did a
nice one about 8 years ago, but that was around Erindale. It CAN be done....:)
