Will DS2 stuff be listed? Will it ever have pictures?! Any chance of a
breakdown by classes (i.e. cruisers, hvy. grav tanks, PA, etc.) instead of
just by race?

DS2 is currently listed as the DSM range, this is the remodelled stuff and as
yet I have not done a list of the old stuff, is there any point as its not
available now?

It stands for Value Added Tax, IIRC. It's tax that is added in before the
price is printed in the catalogue, also IIRC.

> is there something I don't know?
GZG ships have no bases and very little packaging. Geo-Hex ships have
large, round, metal bases with clock faces and 90 degree fire arcs modeled
onto them. For small ships, these add cost and value to the pack, and
probably are necessary to warrant the amount of packaging Geo-Hex uses.

Value added tax. Its based on the value of the product being sold. In the UK I
beleive its something like 17.5% of the value of the product on top of the
price of it. At least it was. Whats the new rate over there then? You could
claim the vat back if you are a registered business as long as you are using
the product for legit business purposes. Not much hope of that with Metal
starships. Well unless you work for the european space agency I suppose.

> > 2) Why the large price difference between GeoHex and GZG versions of

Haven't a clue. Business decision perhaps to encourage more purchasing of
larger ships? Better profit margin on them?

Typical though. Heres me about to send on for a new order and the exchange
rate between the Irish pound and sterling rockets. Nowa price rise. Sigh.
Perhaps its a sign that I should paint the ships I already have first...

Geo-hex provides a metal stand with clockface and rear arc (or front,
depending on how you want it) for each of the ships in the pack.
Personally, I'd rather have it done the UK way with the Geo-hex stand
available separately as the stands are overkill for anything smaller than a
battlecruiser. But they DO look very nice. They also package the minis in a
blister pack which increases the cost a bit. And you have to take in account
licensing fees, shipping the master molds to the US and such.

For what you get, the pricing structure isn't bad, though it breaks down with
some of the ships, cruisers and fighters in particular. In fact, the prices on
the dreadnaughts and carriers are probably a little cheaper in the US when you
take in account the exchange rate.

Value Added Tax - basically a purchase tax of 17.5% levied on almost
everything except books, kids' clothing and food. A filthy plot by the
European Union.... The way it works is that small companies do not have to
charge it until
their gross turnover hits a certain threshold - we've just hit it, so
the VAT amount now has to be added to all our prices except the rulebooks, so
we can collect the money on behalf of H.M.Government and give it to
them......
We can work out VAT-exclusive prices for overseas customers, as you guys
don't have to pay it.:) They just get you on customs duties when it arrives in
your own
country... :(

> 2) Why the large price difference between GeoHex and GZG versions of

> is there something I don't know?

It is mainly down to the fact that GeoHex put the big metal stands in with
the ships for US sale (and blister-pack them), so that the small ships
have much more metal in the stands than in the minis! In the UK we use the
much
cheaper plastic stands, and don't pre-package the models - for the US,
blistering 4 scouts & 4 stands costs as much (and uses as much metal, if not
more!) than 1 Battleship with one stand! Different techniques for VERY
different markets.

Yes, up till now all GZG prices have been ex-VAT, because our turnover
was
under the threshold at which we had to become a VAT-registered business
-
hence we have not had to charge it. With the increase in turnover in the last
year (largely due to taking over CMD) we have hit the threshold, which means
we have to register by law, and thus have to charge VAT on all items (except
books). It isn't through choice, because all WE get out of it is a huge amount
of extra hassle, paperwork and red tape!!

I need to confirm the exact position re: overseas orders with my accountant,
as the VAT rules are horribly complex and it can be very costly (to us) to get
it wrong. I'll post more info when I have it.

VAT: Value added tax: has just been added to the ship price, in the UK you do
not, as a company, have to charge VAT till you reach a certain annual
turnover, it would appear that GZG has now reached that value and therefore
MUST by law add VAT to their prices.

If you are a non EU resident you are not obliged to pay VAT, but remember Jon
IS obliged by law to charge it, so how you go about getting a refund is
unknown to me at present, you might talk to your tax office to find out.

Also all GZG ships now _include_ clear flying stands, and as you will
see from the new prices and the update when I get it done some of the ship
prices have actually gone down, I think jons taken this opportunity to re
structure some of the prices.

Note that the same procedure is available for the Canadian GST (Goods and

Hmm, I suspect the video formats there are NTSC though not PAL. Electricity
(voltage?) is possibly different too. Pardon the negative attitude.

I wonder does this mean that an order has to be over £50 in order to claim
the vat back? Could be problematic although to be honest I doubt many of us
outside the UK order much below the £50 mark in any case. Just not cost
effective for postage, otherwise.

I missed your first message because I was having ISP problems (I got it
recently but it seemed somewhat out of date.....).

I'm using Netscape 4.7

The speed is good but the images aren't centered. They are at the top,
slightly left of center.

Also, the window it opens is far bigger than the figure. You might want to set
some window size parameters. On my computer, it opened a full sized window to
show the image. <grin>

Though, if you have room, it might be cool to have a standard size box on the
catalogue page that the image loads into.

For nice large high quality image - this is really nice
for BB-01 example it doesn't work as well but I can live
with it, if you can get the caption under the image (whatever its size) then
it will be fine. I notice the images you are using are low quality JPEGS, it
would be a vast improvement if the compression rate were not so high, these
are small images anyway and need to be high quality to be useful and show off
the items to their best.

The links work. The image in the window is slightly left of center but it's
there.

But.. <G>

One of my pet peeves is the spawning of new windows. If you run your browser
full screen, you get the "joy" of having to close down each and every spawned
window. =Every= time a web site spawns a window that I can't "back arrow"
from, I grind my teeth a little further to the gum line.

i second that. i have yet to see a use of pop-up windows which really
added something over just using frames or javascript.

Salon.com (my favourite online magazine) spawns pop-up windows whenever
you take a link to another site. For instance, if they have a story that
mentions, say, a Linux site with a link to the site, clicking on the link
brings up another window. I find this is good. It allows me to keep the
original story open in my first window. That way I can explore the other site
and not have to worry about hitting "Back" several dozen times to get to the
original story.

But I agree, if you are staying within a site, pop-up windows are evil.
A properly designed site doesn't need them.

I also have a thing against frames, as I find most people don't code the
frames properly. I try to avoid building frame-based pages myself...

Well, often I right click on the link and select "Open in New Window" (using
IE I presume netscape can do this?). This way I can choose when I wish a new
window to be open.

Unrequested pop-ups can be very distracting so I would prefer not to
have them forced on me.
