Weather and everything else permitting, we will be at HAMMERHEAD at Kelham
Hall this Sunday (15th); as far as we know we'll be in or near our usual spot
in the Carriage Court. We have done our best to replenish stocks after the
very busy January, but there may be some
items that are still in limited supply - so please come and see us
early if you can!
We MAY have a couple of surprise new items in 15mm out in time for
the show - if possible I'll try to get some preview pics up before
the day, but otherwise you'll just have to come and see us to see what they
are....
One special request to any of you who are planning on buying stuff
from us on Sunday: it is very difficult for us to take credit/debit
card payments at this show, because of the terrible-to-non-existent
mobile phone reception in the Carriage Court (at least on the network that we
use) which means that we can't make authorisation calls on card transactions
without leaving the stand and going outside! It would therefore be very much
appreciated if, where possible, you
could bring good old-fashioned cash or even chequebooks - thanks in
advance.
On other things, we have now caught up to date with the huge
post-Christmas order rush, and we're now back to our usual turnround
speed on most orders; there may be a little further disruption caused by this
weekend's show and the one at Tonbridge (Cavalier) the following Sunday
(22nd), but overall things are pretty much back to normal!
I've had a few folks asking about progress on the FT Fleet naming
contest that has been running since last October - well, because I
haven't had the time to (a) go through all the entries in detail (there have
been a lot, and they're still coming in) or (b) get any more of the mystery
fleet's ships into production yet, the contest is still open for the time
being. More info as soon as I can get round to it.
That's about it for the moment, hope to see some of you on Sunday, and look
out for the previews of the latest releases very soon!

You going to be at either of them?

Probably not, they're both a bit of a long slog for me since I've moved out of
London to near High Wycombe. I hope to make Salute, but even that
has changed from "a short walk from home, via a good fish-and-chip shop"
to "more than an hour's drive away".

It's funny how distances to places affect different things. For climbing,
anything within an hour and a half drive from me I consider "local". But if I
drive that far for game, it seems like a much larger commitment (maybe it's
because in climbing I'm out for the day, but gaming it's just for a
couple/few hours in the evening, plus the drive home)

Whereas I drive twice a year about 50 mi, each way, twice a year about 220 mi,
each way, to spend the weekend gaming, and almost every year about
700-900 (whether in Indiana or Ohio) each way, for a slightly longer
period.
I understand that some of us in the colonies make a bigger thing of such
events...
Of course, I don't hang from perfectly lovely cliff faces that would look a
good deal less lovely if I did.

One of the members of my RPG group (used to be two members) drives 3 hours
(one way) once a month for a couple of days of roleplaying.
I'm scheduled for three game conventions this year, the closest of which is 6
hours away. (That's a convention in Birmingham, Alabama
next month. The other two are GenCon in Indianapolis -- 12 hours away
-- and DragonCon in Atlanta -- 8 hours away.)

On the day there's no unpainted lead in the house, I will probably die from
shock.

Excellent, the Leadhead strategy...
However, you're all missing the point: you don't go with the intention of
buying needed items, you want to be ENTICED by the unexpected.
Oh, and fifty miles isn't a road trip; In LA, it's across town. Metro KC, say
from Olathe to the far side of Independence is almost thirty miles, further up
in Liberty. For me, Lincoln to Omaha is 'the next big town over...' My gf used
to do it as a daily job commute. It was hardly the worst I've heard.
Lincoln, NE to the far side of KC, THAT'S a road trip, but just barely.
Fair's fair, I suppose I should admit that all of the game trips are now part
business, since becoming part owner of the shop. Smaller occurrences give us a
chance for a table with the store's name on it for gamers to see, though most
of the trade is our used bin and items from owners'
collections, and the Origins/Gencon give an interesting feel to the
industry. Sometimes you can really feel the reps sweating long before the bad
news actually comes out.
Still, I miss the all night drives up to Denver when it was just a game con,
and a visit of my then adolescent daughter.

PS Megan is now the mother of twins, and pushing hard for another
father-daughter trip to Indy.
PPS Have I ever mentioned the store's web site? Dreadful, really, but we've
finally got a calendar (thank you Google), www.gauntlet-games.com.
