http://lists.csua.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lHi
I've just signed up, saying hello. Hello! I've just come across Full thrust
etc, and dont have a background in tabletop gaming. I am interested however.
My next question is whether this list is active. I havn't found many signs of
recent activity on the web. I guess I'll find out soon?
Hoping to hear from people
James Austin
Hi James,
I've been on the list for about 3 years now. Yes, it's active. Messages come
in bursts, punctuated with short lulls, but it's active.
I've been playing miniatures games for over 25 years, and FT for about
3.
I also play Dirtside.
If you have any questions, this is the place to ask.
There is also a Full Thrust yahoo group that is periodically active.
Welcome aboard!
John

http://lists.csua.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lHi, James,
Welcome here. As Don and John have said, yeah, the list is active, but it's
not overwhelmingly so. At times someone will hit on a topic and a string of
messages will kick off in lengthy discussion, but usually the run is short
before it gets too overwhelming (well, for most folk, anyway ;-) ). If
you have *any* questions about FT, or the other GZG games (Dirtside,
Stargrunt, FMA), or about miniatures gaming in general, fire questions away.
If you get a response that seems brusque and less than friendly, don't take it
to heart, it's just how that particular poster usually 'talks'. Nothing
personal meant by it. Most folk here won't blow smoke up yer exhaust, and
quite a number of them even know what they are talking about. :-D In
gaming as well as Real Life.
A number of the peeps on here have been around for quite a while. I, for one,
discovered FT about 13 years ago now, and joined the list within a month or
two (maybe a few weeks; can't remember) of being intro'd to the game.
Also quite a few people maintain various webpages for the GZG games. Mine is
here:
Echoing the other posters, welcome James! As others have said, the list is
active in fits and starts, but the listers are a very friendly bunch and flame
wars are very rare (and usually quickly extinguished on the rare occasions
they do happen).... if you want to know anything there is usually someone who
can answer, we have a lot of folks here who are current or
ex-military and know what they are talking about, and at least a
couple in the armaments or armament-related tech industries. If
someone makes a point very strongly, chances are they have the knowledge to
back it up, which in my experience is quite rare on many forums!! <G>
Pleased to hear you're getting into the games, and hope you have fun with
them; looking forward to your postings.
Jon (GZG)
PS: don't worry about the obsessions with sheep that certain listers
have, it's quite harmless really....... ;-)

Well, that's about as [OFFICIAL] as a welcome can get around here :-D ,
so you may now consider yourself welcomed -- but I'll add my voice to
the off-key chorus: glad to have you here. There's always room for one
more inmat-- er, member. ;-)

I think it's the equivalent of artllery counter-battery fire, but it
works.

Yes, it's usually Vehemence is inversely proportional to Knowledge, but not
here. We have people here who have walked the walk as well as being able to
talk the talk.

But the sheep aren't... especially when mixed with cheese. :-P

Welcome,
So which games are you interested in? Full Thrust is good for
small-large
spaceship fleets. Dirtside is tank combat, usually 6mm. Both are very good,
however, IMNSHO Stargrunt is the best squad level game I've ever played. The
mechanics are elegant and keep both players involved.
All can be played with counters but are more appealing with miniatures. those
miniatures can be micromachines or the star wars storm troopers and rebels
from the toy store or they can be the
excellent GZG or other on-line producers lines of minis.
One of the debates around here is the One True Scale(TM). It's not heated as
everyone realizes it's completely personal preference. As you seem to be
starting from scratch I'd recommend 15mm unless you have a local group who
already has minis, then use whatever scale they use.
You may find you enjoy painting minis as much as playing. If so you can ignore
the following.
An old Napoleonics player once told me "Paint your first army. After that pay
someone to paint them."
