The new stuff looks lovely. I will have to consult with others in our group
but 2010 might be the year of 15mm for us – particularly as I know some of
them are very keen to get into Flames of War – the appeal of that slightly
passes me by, the models are nice but seem to be horribly expensive and I have
too much invested already in 20mm WW II – and as if that had stopped me in
the past. Â I can see some of the individual pieces (the remotely mounted gun
on the Rommel III) being ready made solutions to 28mm problems (tarting up
some of the ancient Airfix Junior armoured cars for use with the Pig Iron 28mm
Kolony figures – probably others later but they are on point) but
I can e-mail the boss after Salute when things have calmed down.
This does beg the slightly OT question, how easy is it to make 15mm terrain?
I am an old hand at 28mm terrain but even 20mm has scared me off in the past
– I think one word 'bricks' will explain why though of late I have been
dabbling with brick textured plastic card with mediocre results – still
better than expected and good enough. You do not need bricks for SF either
which is nice. Â Is N gauge model railway stuff too small for 15mm figures? I
am pretty sure it is, it seems to be a good match for 10mm in theory, but it
seems worth asking someone who has seen the elephant. Â Firestorm Armada seems
to be our groups SF game of choice at the moment, no one is actually playing
it but several people are ramping up to it but it seems sensible to me to use
my existing NSL fleet, augmented with some of the shiny new (within the last
year or two) releases. An excuse to buy some new toys without having to start
from scratch. They are playing the fantasy naval sister game but I am put off
by the miniatures for it and none of my wet navy ships will work with it scale
or era wise so I am hoping to pick up something vaguely appropriate at Salute
though
I might attempt some scratchbuilding as well - if I can do it in 28mm
how hard can it be in a smaller scale? Â

I think that FoW isn't that much more expensive than, say, Jon's range of
vehicles. I believe any of Jon's vehicles that go for 7.5 pds or more are
comparable or more expensive than the FoW vehicles (which are mostly $11 US).
But balancing that out, anything under 7.5 pds is cheaper than the FoW line.

Then again, I'm looking at it from the US perspective. I don't know how much
FoW stuff goes for across the pond.

I home-make some terrain (hills and the like), but for buildings, or
bases,
or stuff like that, I go with pre-made (JR Miniatures, Kerr&King, etc).

TT scale is about right for 15mm. However...TT scale is hard to find (at
least in the States), and is bloody expensive. :-/

Interestingly, I found some Hallmark buildings that were about right in scale,
but obviously American, and these were played with at the store, and
promptly abandoned for the far more appropriate to micro-armor kitsch
pieces I'd hoarded for years. 'Real' sized buildings took up too much space on
a limited table area, everyone assumes you'll be fighting around huts, and
people were far more interested in the tanks' paint jobs than reality of the
buildings' scale, apparently.

Eye of the beholder, of course. I'm the fellow at the store that can watch an
old movie, and forgive Tigers made from sufficiently boxy later model 'merican
tanks in drag. I tend to draw the line at Sherman 'Panzers', though.

Of course, if I ever do play FoW, given my painting anxiety, I'll take a lead
from some of my FT fleets. I'm fine with micro machine ST and SW. I
have no problem with putting, *horrors*, Hasbro/AH Axis & Allies
Miniatures
on the table. ;->=

For what it's worth, I consider the original question only slightly OT, in
that. Fans of Tuffleyverse have created colony world fluff that makes any
period architecture far game. Medieval fantasies with spired castles and
timbered Tudor row houses are common in sci fi, so I think it's high time for
a dense foliage of reds and purples surrounding a split level ranch.

There are several companies that make historical buildings in 15mm.

There are a number of companies making 15mm cardstock buildings, including
damaged buildings. If you play around with cardstock buildings, you can also
take larger scales and shrink them during the printing process.

If you want to go the scratch built route, N scale is a little on the small
size, but N scale tend to look about right (maybe slightly big) for the ground
scale, depending on the rules, of course. I actually liked the effect, but
some people might be put off.

The biggest issue with 15mm is a dearth of science fiction buildings.

Did you mistake on repeating 'N scale', or am I just being dense? Ok, not
mutually exclusive...

I left out a piece.

I meant to say, "If you want to go the scratch built route, N scale is a
little on the small size *compared to the figure scale*, but N scale tends to
look about right (maybe slightly big) for the ground scale, depending on the
rules, of course. I actually liked the effect, but some people might be put
off."

In other words, for the rules I was using N scale houses looked okay (not
oddly huge) compared to the ground scale, while they were a little small
compared to the scale of the figures.

To add a little more, there are some items where HO Scale works fine for 15mm.
Things like fences and trees look okay in 15mm. HO scale trees are probably
the most universal piece of terrain you can get. They come in various sizes,
so they work great from 40mm down to 6mm (though you might not want 8" pines
on your 6mm game board...)

No, I was dense. ;->=

Makes perfect sense, now.
