Hi all,
To keep the Vacc-heads happy, the shipyards are busy again....
I'm calling for suggestions for NAMES for the new-construction NSL
that are currently on the slips - ones that sound good for the NSL
feel of Austro-Prussian Military, but don't clash with the old design
names. Feel free to post any suggestions you have, for some or all of
those below! :-)
Class names are needed for:
Scoutship Strikeboat Corvette Frigate Light Cruiser
Patrol/Escort Cruiser
Heavy Cruiser Battlecruiser Battleship
Heavy battleship/BDN
Superdreadnought
Light Carrier Heavy Carrier Escort Carrier
Fleet Auxiliary Assault Transport Orbital Bombardment Monitor Attack Cruiser
New Light Fighter New Heavy Fighter (plus couple of other fighter names if
possible, if we do extra variants)
Note that this doesn't mean that ALL the above classes are ready yet,
but I'd like to get all the names lined up ready for the releases -
look out for news on the first batch very soon.....
Thanks! :-)
> Scoutship -- Beethoven
Thanks! :-)
Any more from anyone?

Rhineland Brandenburg Hanse Hanover Mecklenburg Silesia Oldenburg Saxony
Lusitia
Schleswig-Holstein

See if you can get a hold of WWI Jane's Fighting Ships, I'm sure there's some
ideas in there.

Two suggestions to suggestors...
Be sure to check the current names for duplication; no Kaiser per se, but a
Kaiser Friedrich makes it probably a no-go.
Jon is probably aware of sources; I think a structured list, such as Chris
has so admirably started, will be most attractive on the work-done side.
That said, I wouldn't mind a Brunhilde-class battlecruiser (sorry, also
no
umlats), and directing purchasers wanting other members-in-class to:
http://www.logh.net/whatmenu.htm
Barbarossa would be second-in-class...

> Be sure to check the current names for duplication; no Kaiser per se,
Kaiser, Konig and Herzog are just titles, anyway--it would be the same
as naming RN ships Emperor, King, Duke. You're more likely to have them named
for specific people, eg Kaiser Fred.
Ortillery Monitor -- Bertha (or Big Bertha)
Absolutely what I was attempting to say, but you could have a Kaiser class
that might have individuals' names.
For instance, you can name the class the first ship in class, or you can do as
the British often did, refer to the common theme, such as Tribal or Flower, or
even letters of the alphabet, for the class. If all the units in the Kaiser
Friedrich class were previous holders of the rank, then you could also refer
to it as the Kaiser class.

http://lists.csua.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lThat was what I was
aiming for, actually. They were intended as class names for the vessels, so
Kaiser Franz Joseph (to pull a name out of thin air) would be the ship name.
"Herzog" class vessels could be named for the actual duchy's rather than
individual dukes, unless they were particularly noteworthy.

Better yet: Grosse Bertha or Dicke Bertha (which I believe was the actual
soldier slang for the weapon in question.)

IIRC, Krupp officially named it Dicke Bertha (Fat Bertha).

Very nice! A lot of people may not make the connection to the Englishized name
(least many people I've talked to about my trip there once a few years ago had
no idea what city I was speaking of)

While we're at it--change my suggestion for the scoutships from
Beethoven to Freiherr von Münchhausen <grin>
I will have to admit, the first time I saw BMW spelled out, I was wondering
where this Bayern was... ;->=
By the time I'd first seen Munchen (without umlaut, it's all Anglicized), I
was a little older and more experienced.
In college, I had a friend who hated the way 'mericans said Napoleon, but
he never took the effort to say Eth-pan-ya for France's neighbor.

So, would you consider it carrying drone fighters as an attack by Munchhausen
(unlaut showoff!) by proxy?

Jon (GZG) Since you ask Jon;)
Knockwurst? Bratwurst? Sheep in German? How about inserting random household
objects through babel fish into German? They might sound suitably militaristic
and fearsome. Until actual German people read them, that is. What about
mountain ranges and lakes in Germany? Or German forests? My geography is
shocking, so I'll leave it to the more learned to name them...

Maybe some ideas here. Of course in two hundred years of history from now to
then it is also permissible to just make stuff up:)

That just means the new heavy fighter is even heavier.:)

Here is a listing of names I use for an alternate NSL fleet design. All are
actual naval ships from the German Navy in WW1 and WW2 and present
day..

I don't know where to look to see if it's already been used, but you've *got*
to find room for probably the greatest of all the Hapsburg generals: Prinz
Eugen (AKA Prince Eugene of Savoy, Principe Eugenio di Savoia and Prinz Eugen
von Savoyen). A heavy cruiser or
battlecruiser would suit his fast-moving, hard-hitting style. As far
as I know, he's the only person after whom *four* navies have named
warships: The British monitor HMS Prince Eugene, the Austro-Hungarian
battleship Prinz Eugen, the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and the Italian
light cruiser Eugenio di Savoia.
> In college, I had a friend who hated the way 'mericans said
Personally I'm all in favour of Anglicisations (or rather "local" names
generally, after all the French call London "Londres" and England
"Angleterre". It seems particularly stupid to worry about changing the
spelling of foreign place names, but still pronounce them incorrectly. As my
Chinese friends point out, what was the point of changing from Peking to
Beijing and then pronouncing it
incorrectly as "Beige-ing" (like pretty much any news-anchor in the
English-speaking world)?

I found this:

There should be some suitable ones in the feminine germanic list.
