people calling them 'pijamas/pyjamas' but always assumed it was just odd

Oh, and another one I'd like the English to 'splain to me:

Al-you-min-ee-um.

Aluminum is related to alumina.... not aluminia....

Crazy English. Mad dogs and so on, something about a mid-day Sun, ramble
ramble, rant rant, eh!?! wot?
