If looking for an interesting WW2 Kitbash:
German 6 or 8 wheeled armoured car (Puma) or the smaller 222. Change turrets
on these (puma with a dome turret with a short barrelled plasma gun, for
instance) and you have
some quite workable sci-fi armoured cars (throw on antennae, scan
dishes, etc as needed and maybe a missile pack).
Tanks are tough sometimes as you have to deal with the tracks. But if you want
a High Mob Wheeled Chassis, the 222 or Puma make good choices. This is, of
course, for 15mm, since
I'm thinking of the 1/72 kits.

Yup, the local hobby store has a couple Pumas in stock, but I was reticent to
buy because of the scale discrepancies.
I bought a 1/48 Tamiya Kettenkraftradt, and the GZG door gunner
matched it perfectly. I then bought the 1/48 LAV-25, and while it
works as an AFV, it's definitely bigger in comparison to the human
figures than an actual LAV-25.
The turret assembly I put on it comes from one of those spheroid things from
the Gundam line, twin cannon on what looks like an ADS mount. I'm a poor
modeller, but it's still coming out looking OK.
Funny you should mention this. I have thought of using a 222 as a carrier for
Combat Walkers. I planned on using the wheel wells as the linkage points for
the walkers, sort of an armored cavity. I still have to do some scale
comparisons though.
Another option and easier to convert, is to get one of the Pumas the open gun
compartment to carry the walkers and use the nice, boxy wheel wells as the
vector ports for the thrust. Heck, might not even need to convert them.
The nice thing about the Pumas is that they are tall enough to allow you
to cut off their under-carriage to let them sit flat on the wheel wells
and still be believably tall.

Make that a 234..sorry.

Done it! I used a 15mm Puma and the turret from a (10mm) Battletech tank that
had a domed shape with twin short plasma guns. I've done something similar
with 15mm Matilda tank and a turret from a Mechwarrior tank and added side
skirts.
