Why don't we setup an IRC "chat room" thingy? Does anyone know how to do that?

As a long time IRC'er i feel i might have some information you all may find
useful. EFNet is one of the larger "mainstream" IRC networks. Any of the GUI
based clients available for download such as PIRCH32 or mIRC have these
servers included. Another alternative is a smaller network
of 4-6 servers called EvilNet. It is a network of IRC servers that is
set up and maintained by wargamers, mainly people who play heavy gear or
battletech, but any wargaming is very welcome. It would be very easy for us to
register a channel there and maintain it. EvilNet is run by Phil

Just some news about ICQ...

Its been bought out for $300 Million by AOL. So forget about it ever being
useful or user-friendly again. Just a personal opinion.

Presumably this will mean it becomes expensive to use (ie. its not geing to be
free anymore).

Sorry to shatter anyones illusions, but thats life for you.

I already have an IRC server running. I'm just waiting another 30-45
days until my full time link is established.

Actually, you can chat over ICQ in IRC style with multiple people and all
that.

I'm desperately trying not to have the last word but... the info came from the
website of an Israeli paper. I don't have the address on this machine, but
there were 3 articles. One contained the news of the sale, the next was one on
the letters of protest being sent by ICQ users, the last article was a more
business oriented article detailing how AOL were doing a share deal in order
to buy out the company. To me it looked genuine.

Anyway, pardon me continuing a dead thread.

Where did this news come from?

Rumours are continually circulating the ICQ network of ICQ being "bought" or
"not being free" or "charging 10c for every message sent" or some other guff
like that.

Personally, I wouldn't believe ANYTHING anyone told you about ICQ until you
heard it direct from Mirabilis.

For the record, as one who does occationally drop by EvilNet for
#Heavy_Gear, I'd love to see the GZG list locted there. Makes life much
easier, though I guess I might start spending *too* much time there. (Though,
since I paint at the same desk that holds my computer, this isn't always a bad
thing....)

Hmm, may even give some thought as to converting/writing dice bots for
GZG games on IRC... might work, have to give it some thought. A slightly
faster alternative to PBEM. (EvilNet allows dice bots, and dice bots *only*,
on the network... very nifty, they are, and I may even be able to
convice Quu to write one up for us. ^_^ )
