http://lists.csua.berkeley.edu/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lHey all,
I've been wondering something of late, about the number of dice people find
they tend to throw during the course of a "standard"* FT battle. That being
impossible to track (or nigh impossible), I'd be interested in knowing how
many dice you have thrown at one time in FT. Is it 10? 20? 37? or 6?
Feel free to add a note or three of any caveats and qualifiers you feel
might be necessary to explain why such a high/low number. :-)
* - standard is, of course, relative to your group ;-)
Mk
Fair question.
We tend to play with smaller hulls than many, mostly because we haven't
painted many larger ships, often fielding a few cruisers and lots of
smaller stuff, we tend to max at 12-16 dice.

If you mean the "total number of dice for the whole battle", you could look up
my AARs to the test list and count them.
As far as "dice in one roll", I usually throw 5-10 dice at a time--so if
I had a 24-die attack, I'd probably do 8d three times. That doesn't
usually com up, though, as I mainly stick to CH and BBs.

Typically, we don't throw more than 20 dice, and most attacks are fewer than
12 dice.
I have thrown huge numbers of dice on occasion, but they were odd cases (like
one banzai jammer soaking up an entire FSE fleet's missiles for the turn, or
Jon Davis custom designs with no screens and all beams).
Having played the Champions RPG, anything over 15 dice feels like a large
fistful of dice.

Very weird... I was going to post a question very, very similar to this!
I've been working on Full Steam. It looks like there are going to be lots of
dice to roll. At close range (extending out to about 18 MU), most battleships
firing a broadside of four 12" guns will be rolling 16 beam dice (four per
gun). If they are within 6 MU they'll be firing anywhere from five to seven 6"
guns, too, which throw three dice each. I think one of the Russian ships had
eight 6" guns per side. That means this puppy will roll a maximum of 40 dice!
(Something around 30 will be more realistic, until damage hits, and at 18 MU
it's more likely to be around 20 dice; beyond that, maybe 8...)
I was wondering if this would be seen as excessive.
Note that ships only have two types of weaponry to worry about, guns,
anti-torpedo boat guns (which use something more akin to a PDS
mechanic), and torpedoes. In most battles only the guns will be used.
There are ways of chopping down the number of dice rolled, none of them
particularly appealing. As I said, I was just wondering if this number of dice
would be seen as silly.
The largest I have seen is 10 to 12. More for conveniance of tracking hits and
misses than size of table.

Indy, About 35, a couple of BDNs knoching the snot out of a BB during a
campaign some years back.
Bye for now, John L.

G'day,
Usually its 12 or less I'd say, but as bigger ships or more ordinance comes
into play then you get more. I'd say the biggest handful I've seen
is 72 (a fairly extreme all C-pulser Phalon variant). Though the most
memorable is still my 18 dice -> 18 "1" results (at least I think it was
18, it actually feels like more every time my family reminds me).

that's an extreme case.
I think our local record was 50+ D6, too - S'V SDNs
at close range pouring everything thru their Beam Nodes!
