I'm going to run a small FMAS WW2 game at ECC this year and I'm tinkering
around with weapon values.
I had planned to stat the German 98k identically to the Garand (12"
bands with d10/d8/d6 fp). Would that offend the purist out there who
would expect a bolt action to have a lower FP? Probably. I could
stat out the Kar98k as d8/d6/d4 but I feel that's a bit drastic.
The Germans will have their ubiquitous MG-34/42 with a wondrously
high FP so it may balance out in the end (playtest time!).
Then there is the Thompson vs. MP-40. The Thompson had a higher ROF
and a larger round so FP should be a bit higher. I was going to use
6" bands with d10/d6/d4 for both.
Comments?
I'm adding a few things to FMAS this year: hit locations, mods based on
damaged locations (have a wound to the leg and the model moves slower and a
wounded arm will drop the weapons FP by one class,
etc.), rolling snake-eyes = time to reload...

is very tough to do bolt action rifles justice. They put out (relative to
a semi-auto or burst capable weapon) fewer rounds. But their accuracy is
good with an aimed shot.
Perhaps: BA rifle shooters can aim and add 50% or 100% to their range band
size. Just requires them to spend an aim action ahead of time.
SMGs and ARs could easily score multiple hits on a target (especially at
closer ranges). A BA is likely to be a single hit. That's another distinction.
The FP model makes BA rifles hard to do justice to, except as snipers. If you
only want to resolve one attack roll, you end up handling burst or
fast-semi-auto fire much like single shot, more accurate fire. Thus you
have some challenges differentiating weapons.
I don't have a good answer for you. ARs present odd challenges - they
can
fire reasonably accurately to long ranges fired semi-auto with a bit of
aim and they can put out bursts or even a flurry of bursts closer in if the
need
arises. In a one-roll FP model, you'ld probably have to give them
reasonable
chances of scoring a hit at all ranges - maybe even an even rating for
FP. The *type* of fire used in each situation might vary but the net effect
might be 'good odds of hitting' at most ranges.
Now, if you had the mechanism, the AR might have a better chance of multiple
wounds close in vs. a single wound further out.

Perhaps divide sum of (quality + fp) / (range die type) to determine
number of hits for SMGs and semi-autos at close range? BA rifles (and
other single shot weapons) would only do one hit.
Using hit locations will spread the damage out but center mass being what it
is...
Of course I could just fudge it and say "each turn represents N seconds...",
include the multiple hits mechanic for all weapons, and stat out the Garand
and 98k identically. I mean it is for Sunday
morning at ECC -- we're all friendly there. Aren't we? :)
That d20 MG42 is gonna hurt...
Speaking of ECC -- and seeing as I haven't asked yet -- I'm still
looking for 25mm DLD APCs if anyone has one or two they can spare. If so bring
'em to Lancaster.
