I'm finding that a Russian T-34 or an IS-3 make for a good base. Some
of the Panzer IVs look promising. I haven't looked into British armor for
this. Some of the French tanks, because of their extremely tall silhouette
would make for a good hovertank conversion (just leave the tracks off pretty
much)

Biggest problem I'm having is finding a way to do modern hatch assemblies.
It'd be nice if a minis company would release a pack of
sci-fi vehicle conversion bits. This could include ray domes, remote
guns, hatches, point defense charges, anti-personnel strips, missile
boxes, etc. It could be offered in 25mm and 15mm. Would definitely help.

GZG to the rescue:

&cart_id=4051366.17166

See items 25ACC-02 and 25-ACC04. I bought them, and found them quite
nice.

Bodies look like they would work well, might need turret mods. As for post WW2
stuff, the Centurian is a definite. Many of the Cold War era
and modern soviet tanks just scream sci-fi. I think it's the dome
turrets.

Yeah, I always thought the Centurion had a futuristic look to it.

I think that for modern tanks, the Swedish S, the Merkava, the LEO II and the
LeClerc have the most futuristic look.

The Russian T-90 and T-80U are particular favs of mine, but the T-90 in
1/72 is only offered by ACE out of Russia and the T-80U is only offered
in 1/72 by some obscure Chinese company and has changed hands and names
a few times making it impossible to track down.

Anyone know a good source of items to use for the following,

1) hatches

2) ray domes

3) PDS charges and anti-infantry strips

4) fan intakes

Thanks,

Eli

One or both of the two GZG kits I mentioned earlier (25ACC-02 or
25-ACC04, can't remember which for which) has hatches, one of the two
has an old school directional radar dish, one has grills that could be
intakes, and one has a couple of steps that could be used as single PDS
charges. But I suspect PDS strips should be relatively simple to kit bash.

ISTR seeing some of this stuff over at DLD too.

The OutRim Coalition? In what way? ;->=

I'm still wondering if anyone took on the movie Jupiter II, and what they used
for a turret. MONSTER grav tank.

Yeah, I was looking at DLD's stuff. Unfortunately, they are in 25mm.
PDS/AP charges are easy enough with card or even spare reactive armor
charges off of conventional tanks. Hatches are the hardest to do justice to.
Modern hatches have become subsystems in themselves now days with all sorts of
optics and gear attached to them.

Agreed. The largest of the hatches in the two kits I mentioned from GZG does
this well.

Trouble I can see here is that I don't want to buy a whole new kit for a hatch
though.

How are folks doing hovertank conversions? I've done some in the past, mostly
by cutting styrene sheets to cover up the spaces where the tracks once stood.
Unfortunately it's somewhat time consuming. Can anyone offer any advice?

(What I'd really like to do is to find some way of copying my old Traveller
grav tanks. I have three, and a grav APC. I'd buy more in an instant but they
are almost impossible to find.)

For air-fan hover, as opposed to grav, have you looked at fast food
trays? Some are rounded with 'dents' that look like skirt fingers. My problem
is that I haven't compared enough tank hull tops to enough trays to see if
there are good size/shape matches...

If there are, you could just about get away with simply laying one on top of
the other.

Alan,

I found that on some tanks, my Airfix t-34s, you can mount the track
wheel mounts in reverse and it forms a solid side wall. Then, all you have to
do is find a way to cover the empty ends. Heck, on some, like
the T-34 again, there is even a space that might make a cool intake on
the front if properly vented over.

My wife is a diabetic and the cylindrical caps to her syringes can fill the
track areas on some of the larger tanks. This is what I plan on doing with my
LeClerc grav tank conversions. I am PSBing them and grav emitters.

Sorry, by "kit" I didn't mean an entire vehicle kit -- it's an
assortment of accessories.

Would you happen to know what code it is? Went to their site and only found
DLD's 15mm kit which I COULDN'T find at their site.

scale alright with 15mm?

For hover skirts, I used air-drying clay.

Roll it out into "snakes", press it into where you want it go go, smooth it,
and let it dry in place. After it's dry, superglue it back into place.

Picture:

That's a 1/72nd Airfix Scorpion (British light tank/recon tank) with
extra bits around and clay skirts. The skirts should be camo painted just like
the hull, but I didn't bother...

Bummer. Well, let's hope GZG in their infinite wisdom will also produce some
in 15mm. DLD does make a vehicle accessory pack in 15mm. I did find that.

When I needed some APCs for my 25mm SciFi I used the Russian BTR-60 and
BTR-70
MiniTanks APCs. The BTR-60 was an open top vehicle which could be used
as a
weapons carrier/milita APC and the BTR-70 was an enclosed vehicle with a
turret used for my regular army APC.

I removed the wheels and filled the wheel wells for an agrav APC (used
squadron shop green stuff). After finishing the APC, I mounted it on a wire on
a stand and my vehicles were "flying".

I build up the filler (green stuff) around the wheel well and shaped it for a
GEV. The green stuff was easy to shape with an exacto knife and I got a nice
rounded skirt effect.

I did the same thing except I used some Russian diecast BDRMs, BTRs,
and three SU-100s. When they're done they'll make good opfors
against the DLD vehicles I have.

I didn't sci-fi them up though. Even in the future there will be
wheeled and tracked vehicles.
