What's the best way to use these? Ideally I'd like to have the option of
removing them so my vehicle can ground/wreck during the game.
I've noticed that they tend to bend. Should I cut them shorter or replace the
shaft with brass or aluminum rod?
Ideas? Things you did?
Thanks,
I do this for space ships, but it should work for vehicles as well.
I make a rod out of aluminum tubing and put an 11mm magnetic jewelry
clasp on to hold the ship/vehicle.
The base of the magnet is about 11mm in diameter, so I put it onto an 11mm
aluminum tube, and make a sleeve out of a smaller section of tubing so that
the magnet "hole" is flush with the top of the tube. I then drill a hole in
the bottom of the ship and mount the other side of the magnet to it.
For space ships, I end up with about 6mm of magnet sticking down from the
bottom of the ship. Since they are only visible when the ship is off for
storage, I don't care. With vehicles, you could embed the magnet more deeply
by drilling a hole in the resin.
The downside is that these can spin on the base. For my ships, I have not
found it to be a huge problem. One solution would be to make a groove in one
side of the connector an a ridge on the other that would keep it in place.
Ninja magic makes the same kind of connector, but with teeth on it to keep it
in alignment. I can't justify their prices compared to doing it my way.:)
Hope this helps,
John

What do you mean by a clasp? Could you link to an example on, say, amazon?
I'm about to build a 15mm army and I'd love a solution to this problem. I have
*many* space fleets and they are always breaking off from their stands, so
this applies there too.

BTW, the vehicles I'm mounting are GZG High Tech 15mm vehicles. They are
heavy. I'm also planning on using flight stands for my 15mm RAFM stuff and
that's even heavier.

Ok, I have done a couple of things.
For starship minis, I got a mess of GW small flight bases and
replaced the stems with 1/8in brass tube, and for the minis I got the
next size down brass tube that would fit into the 1/8th and mounted
that to the ship minis. I put a dab of thin CA glue inside the 1/8th
and threaded them together. I haven't had one come apart yet.
For 15mm vehicles I did pretty much the same using GWs large flight
bases, adding the next size larger tube than 1/8th as reinforcement
around the 1/8th stem as the figures are larger and I wanted some
taller flight stands. Also I didn't glue the figures stem into the flight
stands as I did with the starship minis so I could represent different flight
levels. I now have collection of interchangeable stands of 1in, 3in and 6in
heights. for the taller stands I found
some 2 1/2in heavy metal washers and glued them to the bottom of the
3 & 6 inch stands to make them less top heavy.
For crashes I generally remove the vehicle from the stand and let it
lay lop-sided on the table with smoke and fire markers, and the look
fairly good that way.
I also tend to make a low 1in stand for every vehicle so they have something
to sit on even if out of play.
Hope this helps.

ions:
1) aforementioned magnets + presumably round brass tubing - buy good
rare earth magnets for strength
2) square brass tubing and no magnets (don't need them) - keeps ships
straight (mount size X brass square tubing perpendicular to metal base,
mount size X - 1 tubing (fits inside of X) into ship mount point. For
extra points, make small collar of size X tubing to glue to ship's stud for
better
fit. Use plastic metal as required for filler or thick zap-a-gap. Can
use other filler putties as well (THIS IS HOW I DO MY FLEET) 3) I use plastic
clear GW flight bases for my 25mm vehicles that should hover or fly. Drill a
bit deeper into the model and make sure they are well settled. To ground, lift
off base. Too easy. 4) Ship bases from Ninja Magic (sp?) that use the magnet
and rod approach may be purchased prefabricated (except for mounting magnet
stud to ship or vehicle). Buy a few bases, a pile of studs, and you've got a
flexible mounting solution.
All 4 allow flat or near flat shipping of ship without base. Need fewer bases
than ships. 1 and 2 require a bit of care in fabrication, but are cheap. 3 is
easiest, but be careful not to get heavy vehicle too high up or tippage will
ensue. 4 is least labour but most cost I suspect.

Yes.....
I'm not sure I would bother with the 6 inch stand for those...
I didn't make it clear that I already own the GZG flight stands, but I'm
not entirely sure how to use them correctly. Are you supposed to drill a
hole and place them through the bottom of the vehicle, or glue them
permanently in place? Plus at their full height, they tend to bend.

I would replace the stems then, they are generally the weak point. Glue the
stem to the base and make sure the hole in the bottom of the figure is deep
enough to hold the figure securely. It's all matter of what works for you.
I just gave you what I did to make me feel secure....

If you replace the cast metal rod with brass of equivalent diameter
(for the heavier vehicles - the light scout ones are fine with the
pewter post), the post goes far enough into the vehicle that it should be
quite stable just pushed in place without glueing; you can then simply take
the vehicle off the stand for "grounded" mode.

'Clasps' are jewelry clasps used to connect the ends of necklaces and
bracelets. Their are clasps you screw together and magnetic ones like he
mentioned. Here are some examples:

You can find them at craft stores that sell supplied to make jewelry.
I've used quite a few of the screw-together clasps to base my spaceship
minis:

It is a bit involved for some people but you might get some ideas from it.
Awesome thanks!
