Hi Derk
Nice job. The Camo is interesting (quite different from the scheme I used) and
the work you did on the comms guy was pretty good. I only have two comments:
Unlike Brian I'm not a fan of such visible numbers (you spent so much time
making the figure look life-like otherwise...) and
would have put these on the bottom and
comment number two - maybe it's just my
monitor, but these guys seem kinda pale for Nepalese.... whom (if I'm not
mistaken and my Internet searches don't deceive) tend to have a
darker/more ruddy complexion.
Otherwise, fantastic job! Keep up the good work. Your drybrushing on the packs
and boots rocks. I really have to learn to do that....

Can't say for certain from the pics, and I AM a vac-head, but I'm
assuming the id's are important in your play of the game, and I must say I was
giving you high marks for making the numbers 'fit' well visually. I understand
what TomB's saying, but if you have to have the id's out there, this is an
outstanding presentation.
I was also wondering about the pale Gurkhas, but I'm not that familiar with
the complexions of the region, and, again, could just be camera-caused
color shifting.
All of the above so I could get a guiltless 'me-too' in on congrats on
great work!

It's based _loosely_ upon tiger stripe patterns in an old military
illustrated (although they certainly did not feature the brown-yellow
stripe). Most of the vietnam-era tiger stripe patterns were rather silly
HORIZONTAL stripes, whereas for effective camo, when standing/moving,
you'd want vertical ones. So these blokes got vertical stripes:) (The
disadvantage of any stripey patterns is that they work best either prone or
standing, not both)
> and the work you did
Well, I used to scribble numbers on the bottom, but then you have to pick up
the figures all the time to peek underneath, which also gets annoying.. This
is the first unit I did this way, and it doesn't look to distracting, from a
distance.
> comment number two - maybe it's just my
You were quite right; I've simply been playing with my new Vallejo paint
(great stuff!), and decided to use the standard 'dark flesh' colour rather
than go on a mixing spree:)
> Otherwise, fantastic job! Keep up the good
The packs weren't drybrushed, really. They were painted khaki-mixed with
black, worked up to khaki in several layers, then from khaki to buff. The
whole figure was drybrushed buff _very_ slightly to help bring out the
folds in the camo pattern and such, the boots a bit stronger.
Cheers,
You mean that I shouldn't just paint my figures like green plastic army men?

By the way, I witnessed a miracle last weekend! At the Warhammer tournament at
the games club, I spotted a table where BOTH players had FULLY PAINTED armies!
Wow! Can you imagine that? I mean, each and every
figure was, you know, _painted_!
I'm still stunned. Maybe someday I will realise we should have rushed in and
rescued both blokes from the evil of games workshop;)

That is, until Carrotwas confirmed to be a dwarf. I guess I can be a dwarf
afterall.

Well the two I had in diapers at the time are quite good painters now
so it isn't all bad ! :-)

Ach, another Dwarf player.
I have an entire chessex box full of GW Man-o-War Dwarf ships. 3
Dreadnoughts, 7 Ironclads, 12 Monitors, 5 Nautilli, 2 Carriers!! (Iron Clad
conversions, one is two hulls grafted together) and a Dwarven shore fort (with
Turrets of course).
3 Chessex boxes worth of Squats, 2 Rhinos (remember when they came 2 to a box
for $15?), 2 Converted Leopard1A4 tanks with crewman, a number of other
converted light vehicles, and a StugIII converted to look like a Dwarven
Assault gun. I lost count of the number of Bikes I had years ago, 15 I
think...
And a whole bunch of Fantasy Dwarves that haven't been touched in 5 years
plus.

I do go back as far, but I am just painting up my first fantasy dwarves.
I do have a lot of (unpainted) Epic scale squats.
;-)

Jeeze, I completely forgot about those. 10 Super heavy Squat Land things
(collossii, leviathans, Hellcannons, landtrains, etc). An entire company of
the VTOL gyrocopter thingys, and lots and lots of infantry, something like 6
hosts with support. All on a big shelf with the 40K, Fantasy and MOW. All
neatly boxed and labeld, never to be used again it seems.....*sigh*
When a GW rep made a stupid comment to me in response to a question about
Squats at a Dragoncon about 4 years ago, I vowed never to give another cent to
GW. Then I found DirtSide....and I was happy with gaming again.
Wow, thinking about it, 2 Rhinos for $15, 12 figures for $12, 4 figures for
$5. Now what do they charge?

FYI,
If you want a blast from the past (modified to avoid any smell of Limburger),
go check out netepic forum at the groups.yahoo.com.
In the archives, you'll find netepic which is a rewrite of Space Marine with
an eye toward removing the cheese and oddities found in the GW version.
In the archives, you'll also find Heresy which adds alot of concepts found in
more advanced rulesets (like suppression, complex(er) morale, etc), on top of
a vaguely Space Marinesque framework. I've never tried Heresy, but it's
supposedly not too bad.
Both are/seem like Beer and Pretsel games, but they aren't bad Beer
and Pretsel games.

Now to the point of this e-mail,
Oddly enough, GW UK is actually charging somewhat reasonable prices for their
infantry sprues currently. (Vehicles and such are still overpriced).
A single sprue of about 60 6mm figures sells for 1.50 pounds (about 2.50 US
dollars). Not including shipping.

Something along those lines, I'll also pulled out my 'bone dice' and
threatened to 'make some new ones':)
