Does anyone have any recommendations for a good acrylic "Gunmetal" color?
Something darker that silver, and hopefully flatter, that could be used when
(wait for it....) painting guns? Or, say, as a basecoat for Terminator style
robots?

I've got a half-decent Aileen's color called "Pewter", which is much
darker than any pewter that I've ever seen, but the coverage is pretty bad.
I'd like to find a decent paint that I could use extensively, if one should
exist.

"Gunmetal" comes in many shades, depending on the manufacturer.

For my Japanese corporate mercenaries, I used an aluminum colour from one of
those cheap hobby store brands.

Most of my gunmetal guns have been Tamiya paint. These tend to be a very dark
metallic grey.

Testors acrylics have a gunmetal, but it's mostly a dark metallic
blue/black/grey.

I started out with the Ral Partha "aged metal" as the only thing that looked
like the metal on a rifle barrel that I could find. When that became
unavailable I horded my one remaining jar.

Recently I have discovered Vallejo Paints. I really like the "natural steel".
The only complaint I have is I first ordered from New Wave on Feb 8. Still no
sign of paints even though they promised shipment right away after talking to
them at the end of March. Still no
paints from them and my e-mails are still seemingly ignored.

Warweb on the other hand has given prompt and excellent service on Vallejo
paints.

That brings up a further question about the Vallejo paints, how do their
alcohol based metals compare to the acryllics?

You too? I loved that color, and mounred the day that I finally had to admit
that my bottle was dead.

This seems to be a common problem with New Wave...I've avoided ordering from
them because of it.

I'll have to give them a shot, then!

G'day,

I didn't mind the GW gunmetal, but the Vallejo one doesn't look bad (we order
ours through Nic at Eureka). If all else fails, silver with a wash of thin
black ink works nicely too.

WELL, I mix my own gunmetal colors using acrylic paints with colors silver and
black, blue, green, gray (makes a flat steel color), brown or wrought iron.
