Grenade Launchers. Recoilless Rifles, SAWs, and other stuff

Subject: Grenade Launchers. Recoilless Rifles, SAWs, and other stuff

A quick question to the list:

I know it says in SG2 that underbarrel GLs are resolved as part of infantry
fire combat. But what about firing at bunkers and buildings
instead without the rest of the squad - or at vehicles? I'm thinking
an M203 (fired by one guy) can make a heck of a mess of a jeep or a thin
walled bunker without having a squad to fire with him. Any suggestions on how
to handle this?

Next question: Recoilless Rifles like the Carl Gustav. What do you think the
best way to represent these items is? They should have better range and damage
than an IAVR but really aren't a GMS and need a crew of 2 (for the most part).
Suggestions? I have a bunch of old true 25mm Battletech forces with 2 man RR
teams that I'd like to use.

As for the SAW question about two linked SAWs, I think I have to disagree with
Owen although I liked his logic (remote controlled, therefore fired by firecon
rather than FP). Mike Elliot answered a similar question way back and it was a
clear answer that indicated two D10s for FP. I have it in an SG2 Q and A
document. I can post the actual document tomorrow if anyone is interested (or
at least a link to it).

A friend pointed out to me that an MG that usually fires from a bipod tends to
become much more dangerous when vehicle or tripod mounted, partially because
of stability, partially because of better optics used on such mounts, and
partially because of more sustained fire (more ammo usually). If this is so,
how do we justify taking a weapon that rolls D10s or D12s for FP and reducing
it to D6s or D8s for Firecontrol instead? That makes a vehicle mounted MG less
dangerous as a rule than a normal one. I'm much more likely to score
casualties
with Quality + d10 or d12 than Quality + d6 or d8. Comments?
Suggestions that I'm off my tree or failed to understand something?

Has the poster of the bunker rules posted them to one of the SG2 pages? If
not, could he or she please do so. It was a good piece and
(along with HMG/APSW rules) makes a good addition to the game.

And could whoever is running the archive of list stuff please mail me
privately to let me know how to get to it (what the address is) and how to
search it for stuff? I'd like to locate some of our last quarter discussions
on snipers and platoon sergeants.

Tom.

Glad you liked them. I haven't contacted any of the SG2 webpage owners
with it yet - slipped my mind.

Now that the topics come up again, do any of you who have sg2 pages want
to make space for my bunker/building rules? Their not huge - about 6500
bytes (bits? whatever) according to my email program.

Jeremy? Mark? Anyone? Reply via private email, of course, and I'll send you
the rules.

*smacks head*

So sorry...I only had 4 hours sleep last night, and in a fit of
brain-death
sent this to the list. O.o.

Glover, spake thusly upon matters weighty:
> (Please note that their IS CURRENTLY NOT ANY Firepower SAW of d12 -

I thought one saw was D10 the other D12 (didn't have my charts with me at
work). Sorry.

> As I understand it the range bands of the turret mounted weapon become

I had considered this point. However... we're saying the weapon is less
effective at close ranges? I really doubt that. Let's consider the double
gauss saw in the turret in question. With Regulars firing
it, we get 2d10+d8 and the range bands are 8/16/24/32/40. With
a basic (did I get the name right? d6 anyway) firecon, which might be the best
one has on such a light weapon, you get range bands of
12/24/36/48/60 which is great, but your attack roll will be 2d6+d8.
Because of the lowered dice, I'm thinking the range band gain isn't all that
great. At anything over 12 inches, your range dice as the defender is equal in
size to your firecon dice. At anything over 36", your range die exceeds both
your die sizes (if using firecon).
Compare this to the non-firecon SAWs where you have to get to 24"
before the range die is a d8 (which then only exceeds one of your three dice)
and out to 32" before it is a d10 and matches or exceeds all 3. So it seems
the turreted SAW is better at range 32" or better, but at ranges under that,
the one without firecon is more likely to cause casualties. And I don't know
about you, but most of our fire
happens at 8-24". Esp if you involve any sort of ammo considerations.
So, I say again, is there not some way to deal with this? (Owen, I realize
troop quality plays in (ie if you have green troops, the effects of range are
more prounounced) but it goes both directions ( ie elite troops get d12 range
bands and therefore get the same range band as the turreted weapons with way
better results if they only use FP dice rather than firecon)).

So, am I the only one who sees the problem here?
