There's this great quote I've loved for some time, even used it on my
signatures, now it's come to my attention I may be misquoting it. Can the
group clarify this for me? I have long quoted it as going like this:
"People sleep peacably in their beds at night only because rough men stand
ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell
Now I've seen it another way, one that seemed equally eloquent. does anyone
know the exact quote, or a good quotes website? I'd appreciate the help.
Might check here...

Just in case no one has the exact quote, let me paraphrase the more recent
version I encountered, maybe we can vote on them or something....
"We sleep peacably in our beds at night only because rough men stand ready
to visit violence upon those who would do us harm." -G Orwell.
That quote and others like it can be seen at www.specialoperations.com. I've
been mulling over using it as the intro quote to Rot hafen.

This is the quote I remember seeing. Can not remember where it was though.
Being in the military myself and working for the Special Operations Group here
in Okinawa I have a special fondness for it.

Talking of quotes etc, I've always liked IIRC "Beyond this line we face the
alien stars. They may not lay their laws or dominions on what is ours. For
none but man stands here."
- Gordon R Dickson (None But Man)
Except that now I've heard it this other way, and I'm not sure which is more
accurate to the original quote. I have seen it on the page you mentioned.

Or how about this one (The Englishmen out there may crucify me if I
misquote.):
"Next to a battle lost, I think the most terrible thing in the world is a
battle lost."

"At the age of four with paper hats and wooden swords we're all Generals. Only
some of us never grow out of it".
- Peter Ustinov
So simple, yet STILL I manage to muck it up!!! Let me try again:
"Next to a battle lost, I think the most terrible thing in the world is a
battle won."
- Wellington
A thousand pardons....

Version I heard/half-remember was "The only thing more terrible than a
battle lost is a battle won."
Supposed to be said as he looked over the wreckage of Waterloo...
