Dear List Members:
I would like to take an informal survery of five RPG settings that have a
conflict setting that might be benificial to use DS II and SG II to resolve
large scale combat. I have chosen five RPG settings that I would like you to
list in the order of preference as to which ones would you chose to adapt to
DS
II/SGII for large scale combat scenarios and needed a simple
miniatures rules set with easy adapitng.
The settings are as follows:
1. Heavy Gear 2. Fading Suns 3. Traveller 4. BattleTech 5. Albedo
I came with this at lunch yesterday and decided to see what list members would
chose which setting as their preferred and least
preferred setting to use DSII/SGII for.
Please list the settings in the order of preference from 1 to 5. 1 is
preferred and 5 least preferred.
1. Traveller 2. Battletech
3-5. Any of the others. I don't know any of them, and don't play them.

1) Traveller 2) Albedo These are both hard SF games that fit in well with the
GSG 'feel.'
3) Heavy Gear - a bit less realistic, but still relatable to DSII/SGII
4) Fading Suns - don't know it
5) Battletech - way too high on the PSB factor, IMHO. Besides, painting
neon 'Hit Me' signs on the mechs would take too much work. >^_-<
Well if we're getting write in votes, how bought one for Star Frontiers?

In order:
1. Traveller - I've got a large selection of 15mm figs and I'm doing
this now anyway.
2. Heavy Gear - although I'm not sure why you'd bother switching as
the game rules for HG are already good enough.
3. Fading Suns - Interesting background, though I haven't read enough
to see how it would play in DS2 or SG2. It seemed more of a political intrigue
game than a combat RPG.
4. Albedo - anthropomorphic animals? I like Usagi Yojimbo; I'd pass on
this.
5. Battletech - sorry, I'm just a little to sick of BattleTech.
Does anyone know the dimensions (in hexes) of the old Orge map?

It's 15 columns wide, and about 21 hexs high. That represents an area 22.5 km
by 31.5 km.

Well, I'd have to rate them as follows:
1. Albedo
This isn't all that popular a game, but it is easily the background closest in
spirit and detail to DSII. Tech levels are similar, and it should be a very
easy conversion.
2. Traveller
Next closest to the standard DSII background, and a game that has always cried
out for a better set of rules.
3. Fading Suns
I'm not familiar with the game, and therefore have no objections.
4. Heavy Gear
Neat game, not too far removed from the spirit of DSII. However, I think the
existing rules handle things just fine, so why convert to DSII?
5. Battletech
They already have several sets of mass combat rules and scads of game support.
Battletech depends on an illogical supremacy of 'mechs which would badly
strain DSII. (Plus, I'm just not interested in that background.)
Jonathan spake thusly upon matters weighty:
> 2. Traveller
As oppposed to just *another* set of ship building or mass combat rules.
They've written striker, azhanti high lightning, snapshot, high gaurd,
trillion credit squadron, fire fusion and steel (I and II), brilliant lances,
etc. etc. and they still haven't got a simple yet satisfying set of rules for
spaceship combat (FT!!!!) or for ground combat (DS2 and SG2). There is no
doubt that this background has a large player base to draw on. It's a pity we
can't get Marc Miller and Jon T together.... problem is I'll bet that Marc
thinks
all the labourious agonizing errata-ridden rules for vehicle and ship
construction and combat are just fantastic....

Let's see, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it (I), need it (II),
need it. I liked the older stuff better. I've noticed that the rules seemed to
have gotten more complex as time went on.

Agree!

Maybe, but I hear that Imperium Games (Traveller 4) are teetering. Marc seems
to have given up on the old rules set, hence his licensing Traveller to Steve
Jackson as a GURPS background.
Mind you, it STILL cries out for an FT, DS2 and SG2 implementation.
