Hello: Mark's journey into Anime continues. I just rented "Gall Force:
The
Eternal Struggle" and watched about 20-40 minutes of it. Great space
combat sequences. However, I have a few questions that a few of you Anime fans
might be able to answer. 1. Why are their only women on these ships? What
happened to the men? 2. What are these Paranoids, and why are they fighting
the "Amazons from Outer Space?" 3. Is it my imagination, or do the beam
weapons of these ships actualy bend and seek there targets. Either that, or I
am mistaking them for missiles. 4. Why are there so many shower scenes? Not
that I mind a good shower
scene ;-) I just think it's getting rather gratitous seeing these
cartoon women running around with no clothes on.

Well Gall Force is a collection of OAV's not just one. I'm not sure if you
have the others, but If I told you why there are only women, it would spoil
the end of the series. It is a major plotline.

Well in the very basic sense they are the "Evil Empire" of this anime. Most
space anime have one. But on another level they turn out to be more than that.
The Women(I forget thier race's name.) have been fighting with the Paranoids
for eons, really the two races no nothing else.

I think they are Beam weapons. You do mean the ones that bend as they are
comming out of the gun ports, right. Those are beam weapons. I think the
mirror or whatever that bends the beam is what aims it.

Anime is made first and foremost for the Japanese audiance. I't seems that
there are stock scenes that more or less have to go in some anime. Nude shower
sceens are one of them. I don't mind it, it's part of anime's charm
:-).

The war has been going on for hundreds of years. I think nobody can recall how

could work like a gravity lens and distort the beam. In "Gall Force 2:
Destruction", they are referred to as missiles.

be a single-gender-culture thing.
Ironically, I had just started rewatching Gall Force in english. Last night,

Forgot to reply to this one. You've never seen a space combat until
you've heard someone cry out "Hom-ming Lasers!" Boy, did I crack up the
first time I heard that one.... ^O^
If you want to see one of the two shows I know of with that cry, you'll have
to get Gunbuster... the other is Nadia, and I don't think Streamline's reached
the end of the show yet. Though, the Arks and Excerion would make *nasty*
ships for FT... hmm.

Well, I'd normally hold off as it gives away future stories, but it's already
been commented on....
The Solanoids are all vat-grown. Somewhere in their past the original
creators decided to go for a single-sex "clone" race (in this case
female).
Also, this was during the time of the anime/manga "Macho Women With
Guns"
phase (Dirty Pair, Black Magic M-66, Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis to name
a
few....a for the good old days as opposed to the saccarine-laced kawaii
stuff
now).

The Paranoids are a race of amorphous shape-shifters who support their
forms normally on cybernetic frames. They also seem to embody the male aspect
of
the series (galactic-scale battle of the sexes). The Solanoids and
Paranoids encountered each other during their expansions and went to war over
the scarce amount of useful worlds.

I do believe that these are missile barrages. In Gall Force 2 the Solanoids
barrages detonate away from the Paranoid craft and it is noted that the
Paranoids are using some new, more powerful type of jamming shield that was
countering the "long-range missiles". Beam weapons do seem to be used
on
the capital ships (BB's and larger), but the primary anti-ship weapons
seem to be missiles, fighters, and mecha.

Well, part of this does come from Japanese culture. Cleanliness is a big thing
and you'll usually see the hero batheing sometime. And of course, yes...it is
a chance to get in a little T&A, but social mores are little bit different
from those in the West.

My copy of Gall Force, which has fan-installed subtitles, I
think, refers to them as photon torpedoes. We've always assumed those weapons
were some form of hypervelocity missile, especially because of one scene where
you can make out some sort of round capsuley thing homing in on a ship.
