In a fit of Shakespearian over ambition ("..that or'leaps itself and falls") I
am attempting to create a webring for Full Thrust (Dirtside, SG...) modestly
entitled 'The Full Thrust Network'.

I have taken the first steps in creation but now I have to read a lot of

instructions.

If you want to join, want to call me an idiot or wish to make some other

comment please let me know.

I hope I am doing the right thing,

MRB

The URL for this thing will be:
http://www.geocities.com/Area/51/Zone/1070/ft-net.html
but at the moment there is just a dummy page there, the real thing should be
there on Saturday.

I probably wont be the only person to ask this, but:

What's a webring?

A web ring is a ring of websites. Each site has a link to both the next site
round and the previous site. That way, after 'dropping in' on any site in the
ring you can navigate round and eventually get back to where you started.
Imagine it as a circle of people holding hands.

Myself, while I can see their use, I sort of don't approve. To me, they
fundamentally 'jar' with the hypertext concept, plus they are more laborious
than (say) a page full of links. The advantage is that they can be centrally
administrated and every page only needs to make sure the 'next' and 'previous'
links are set right to the central store site. Then you can add and remove
sites from the ring without loads of links becoming invalidated.

There are some management functions that allows random jumps and shows you the
next or previous 5 sites.

Its just a cooler (maybe) way of implementing the usual 'related links' page

You made a typo. The URL should be:

Except that, with all linked list, one bad link will throw you into
netherspace (now, being circular, you can come at it from the other
direction). I don't really think this is "cooler" just different. And more
failure prone. But its all in fun anyway, so who worries about details like
that?

A webring are a bunch of related sites which are linked together. Presumbaly a
FT webring would entail each FT page having a little selector on the bottom
called the Full Thrust Webring. You could select go to next site, or previous
site, Skip site, or display next five sites.

The nice thing about it, is that you do not have to do all these net searches
for pages you are interested in. You go to a site, check it out, then when you
are done, move on to the next site. In this manner all the related pages form
a "ring" that you can go through and check out. hope that helps.

Ha! SNAP!:)

Jon Tuffley would verify that just a little time ago I was discussing this
idea with him. Unfortunately Webring was down at the time (changing servers?)
and I let it go, looking to hook back into it later... but considering how
many web sites I run now (phew) I'd be glad to join someone ELSE's Webring..:)
