Hello: Well tonight was the big night. The monster killer fleet was ready to
go. However it was partically whipped out by the third turn by two other
fleets carrying wave guns. My fleet must have been hit with at least 5 wave
gun bursts in the second turn. It wasn't pretty. Looking back, I think my
defeat was due to three factors: 1. My ships were in close formation. 2. I was
caught in a corner of the board. 3. I disobeyed the sacred rule of all space
combat games.
       SPEED IS
LIFE!!! I trudged along anywhere between 8 to 3.

All in all it was still fun. I was able to bring down quite a few ships before
I eventually bought it. Wave guns can be fun (if you are the one using them.)
I'll do some tweaking to my fleet and see if I can improve it. BTW, it turns
out that I CAN use fighters and missiles. The reason why they don't use them
is that they claim that they can be easily whipped out by a Nova or Wave
cannons. I tried to explain the idea of flanking manevers and detaching the
carrieer from the rest of the fleet, but I don't think they understand. My
fleet will definetly feature fighter carrying ships next time. However, they
move fighters and missiles first, then ships.

Well, that kinda sucks a bit, but...

Is this necessarily true in FT? I mean, yeah, you don't want to be going too
slow, but there is such a thing as too fast, I think, esp for the Cap ships
(then again, guess it depends on your playing field, and how
much room you have to work with; my typical speeds run from 6-20)

Don't see a big problem with that. You can now use fighters as artificial
terrain. Have some of your ships with wave/nova guns, the others
carriers. Use the fighters to make the enemy ships move in front of your
wave/novagun
ships. If they don't, they're fighter-fodder. :-)

Yes! More accurately, relative speed is life, especially when facing
big mean one-arc weapons like wave guns and railguns. If you've got the
speed and maneuverability to stay outside the other guy's front arc, you have
a good chance of taking out that monster ship.

Speed is also the best defense against missiles, because their limited
maneuverability starts to be a real handicap when you're going as fast as they
are.

Both of these statements are true. However there is at least one exception (I
think) which is when your ship is carrying AA megabatteries. In this case,
assuming the opponent doesn't have them, it is in your best interests to close
the range as slowly as possible,
especially in that crucial 54"-36" bracket where your opponent is
unable to fire on you. In this case I've found it useful to enter the battle
at a very low speed or even stopped and let the enemy come to me.

That's what I was trying to do. Slow down and get them in Wave gun range.
However, I didn't take two things into account. 1. That I was going to be
ganged up on by two players. 2. That both of them had wave gun monuted ships.

Can you say "BOOM?"
