Subject: FT without breaking a tiny piggy bank...

I'm aiming to start a FT campaign in Grand Rapids, MI (USA) after January.
Right now I'm recruiting players and running demos at the local game store in
order to generate interest. Right now I have 5 players committed and
enthusiastic about running games. '

That's the background, now my point: One of my players is broke, or very
nearly so. So what is the most economical way for him to obtain his own fleet?

He's considering buying modeling tools to scratch-build his own, and he
probably has enough time Yet should his efforts not pan out in time for the
campaign, I'd like to ask the group it's input on a quick and
cheap-to-buy
fleet to use as a stop-gap for the game.

He'll be welcome to use my models as I'll be running the campaign and as an
absolute last resort we'll print out cardstock counters he can place on the
table. Of course, miniatures are preferred.

I've amassed a pretty nice start for a fleet on a tiny budget, one of my
favorite ploys is to rummage the
bits boxes of the local gaming/hobby stores.

Legos?

I've heard of someone who uses golf tees for ships, which do sort of have an
Orion drive look to them.

The Noble Armada plastic minis set could probably supply all of the escorts
you could ever need:

He might also want to check the local hobby shop for underwing armament packs
for model planes. I've found that several of these can make passable ships
with little or no modification.

Many toy guns off of action figure vehicles, often 'trash', can do
surprisingly well. Model airplane bombs are great starts, and just gluing on
odd fiddly bits.

I know of one fellow (don't have the URL at the moment) that swears by card
similar to cereal boxes (triangles and squares glued in layers to make 3d)
with things like lentels and split peas to make domes.

I think you can do smashing things with plastic cutlery; the tips of tines of
forks for fighter craft, and the handles cut and shaped offer other
possibilities. Unfortunately, my idea is strictly theoretical. Many pieces
start brilliantly, and just sit waiting for me to finish them.

However, the cruisers I started out of Dixie fork handles have lovely curves
for the fellow that was tired of 'ships that look like bricks'...

Lastly, Germ's excellent work on space stations proves you can do amazing
things with printed paper, if you do the folds right.

Tonsha, IIRC.

The local Big Lots occasionally has bags of plastic starships; use a good
primer and you can paint them. They don't look as good as cast metal but
they're certainly okay to start with, and could be detailed.

I know a guy who literally got spaceships out of a gumball machine, painted
those up and, except for the weight, could not tell the difference from the
lead minis. He then acquired plastic spaceships from a garage sale and then
the party supply section of Walmart for cheap and painted those up as well.
Lastly, he has a fleet of "organic" ships made from shells from the sea
shore!!

There is one way you could do it too. Assumign this gent is a buddy and not
just a casual gaming aquaintence you and your group might just want to put in
a pool and gift him a small starter fleet. This would let him have a good base
fro mwhich to build from. You also ru na good chance of creating an incredibly
loyal fan of the game as well as a dedicated gaming pal. We have done this
once or twice for pals who were in a pinch.

If they're the sort who doesn't like taking handouts then you could always buy
them as a group and then giv them to him on then ext appropriate
gift-giving occasion.

Not an option for everyone, but always a good way to do somethign nice and
feel good about it.

... As they aren ow in mine. These.... Kick.... Butt..... Now the questions
are, how creative can I get in designing a fleet, and how good will I be at
the actual crafting?
