Notes: Escort Cruisers assignments Escorts per Transport: Maximum 36 Transport
per Convoy. Under 16 Transports = 6 Escorts
16-22 Transports = 7 Escorts
22-36 Transports = 8 Escorts

Scouts and Armoured Cruiser Group are also used for Commerce raiding, and
bait.

Common NSL tactic is to send in a scouting group to engage the enemy fleet,
then turn and run away, leading the enemy ships into the guns of the Battle
Squadrons.

Flotillas are broken down into half-flotillas. These half-flotillas can
be assigned to any task at hand.

The rest of the Corvettes and Frigates are spread out hunting pirates, on long
range patrols, or other duites.

Hull Number - 1st two digits = Flotilla
3rd digit = Tactical Number

across a little harsh; I just got done dealing with some idiot who asked me
for some climbing information, then when I gave it to him, went ballistic on
me, informing me that I was lying to him, that I need to grow up and be more
mature with my emails, and stop trying to pick up his daughter; <sigh>;

Good work, but...it seems like a....'cookie cutter' fleet to me. There
is almost no variance between any given squadron/group/whatnot. Only
the names have been changed between forces. For example, *every* Battle
Squadron in the First Fleet is identical to every other Battle Squadron in
that same fleet. Ditto for the cruiser groups and various flotillae. This is
repeated throughout the entire NSL Roster. It doesn't...seem very real to me.
Does the (contemporary?) German Naval Order of Battle reflect this??

I have no good feedback at the moment than to suggest breaking up the numbers
and components of the various elements in the Fleets so they aren't carbon
copies of one another. Give them more identity than just different names.

This is apparently loosely based on German OOB at Jutland or something like
that. And yes, the ideal is to have each battle squadron or carrier group be
interchangable.

MK,

If you look at any Order of Battle, you will see that on paper, that they
are all the same - 3 platoons/lances/units/squadrons/whatever = 1
Company. Each unit is made up of the same forces (again on paper) US Tank
forces have serval verisons of the M1 to choose from, but they are still all
M1s. Each company has the same number (again on paper) of M1 as every other US
Tank company. Even if its equiped with older M60s it still has the same number
of tanks.

If you look at:
http://history.cc.ukans.edu/~kansite/ww_one/naval/jutob.htm You will see
that every unit with out combat loses or mechanical breakdown is the same. It
just makes it easier to control that way. If I send in a Battle
Squadron, I expect it to have between 3 and 5 Dreadnought/Battleships,
not
1 Dreadnought/Battleship and three light Cruisers. A mistake like that
could cost you a battle, if not the war.. Remember that this is a peace
time force, so it should have a full roster - baring any mechanical
problems, or special assaigments (ie Kra'Vak problems).

I also did not retire any units, such a the US Army did with the 7th Calvary,
after it did not return from the Little Big Horn. This is another option to
break up the "carbon copies".

this makes a lot of sense to me - the components of the fleet should be
as interchangeable as possible. why might a fleet have squadrons of varying
composition by choice? oh, i know: to do different missions. still, there
would be a relatively small number of different squadron types ("cruiser
squadron", "reinforced cruiser squadron", "independent cruiser squadron").

also, bear in mind that that OoB was nominal - the actual situtation
will be that, minus ships out for refit, minus ships detached for
miscellaneous other reasons, plus obsolete and auxiliary ships attached to the
main
fleets, and then randomised by cross-attachment. recall that no plan
survives contact with the enemy!

Two myths in one place. First, not all of the 7th was wiped out, just
the part with Custer. Second, the 7th Cavalry is still around--IIRC,
it's batallions are now armored batallions in the 1st Cavalry Division.

I know guys that have served in 1/7th in Vietnam and today. They still
think they're riding with Custer...

Wait, wait, wait...Order of BATTLE...not Fleet Roster. I apologize, for I
thought for some reason you were presenting a fleet roster for the NSL. It
only took me ALL DAY to figure this out. [beats head w/bat]

John,

As far as I can remember, Gen.Custer had 5 troops with him, the other 6 troops
of the 7th were on the flanks (3 per side) and around 2 miles away. These 5
Troops were the C, E, F, I, and L troops. They did not return for active
duity, so they were listed as missing in action, and were not replaced untill
Dec 1917. So for 41 years the 7th Cavalry was missing 5 Troops.
