Played FT for the first time in...well, too long last night, and with the
Fleet Book rules for the first time ever. It was a simple meeting engagement,
about 15 ships on each side, and as advised the SMLs were limited. Only one
ship had one, and it never hit a thing. Only got two shots off, mind you, so
that's not all that meaningful.
It's also worth noting that, because we were gaming on a much smaller table
than usual, we used centimeters instead of inches for the first time.
While this caused a few problems -- none of the players was used to
estimating distances in cm -- and was one of the reasons that the SML
shots didn't hit, it worked out well enough that we've agreed to use cms for
FT from this point forward.
But anyway.... One of my oldest painted ship models is a Starfleet Wars Terran
Federation "Super Galactic Dreadnaught". It's a huge chunk of lead,
significantly bigger than even the largest GZG ships -- there's a
picture on this page
-- showing the Superior ships next to an ESU fleet, and the SGD's
grotesque size is obvious.
Has anyone come up with stats for a ship this size? I did it myself, years
ago, and posted the results on the first version of my web page...but that
was pre-Fleet Book, and is long lost in any case. I'd be curious to see
what other people have done with this monster -- I'm esitmating the mass
to be at least 500, although that's probably a little conservative.
For what it's worth, I'll be using the SGD in scenarios designed specifically
around it, not as a ship of the line. It's big enough to be a fleet all by
itself, when you get right down to it....

Infact yes:) I've got a Earth Force Posideon Carrier and that's HUGE. I set it
at 500 mass and made it a dedicated carrier. It carries 18
fighter groups and mass PDS + C1s with about 8 C2s. I think at one point
I made a SSD with 22 fighter groups on it. As with all ships make it mission
specific. If you want a carrier, make it all carrier, if you want a Super
Dimentional Fortress make it nothing but beam batteries.

A nice model. I have five :-)

Dean Gundberg has FB stats for all Starfleet Wars ships (except possibly the
very latest releases) on his Star Ranger page at
http://star_ranger.homestead.com/ (in the "personal stuff" section).

<chuckle> Yes... I have five SGDs (all Terran, unfortunately), but so
far I've only used them in demo games :-/
Regards,
Wow! The site's FINALLY been updated, and is open, though they say they'll not
be processing orders 'til Feb. I know I'd about given up. If this is
not news to the group, sorry I missed something. ;->=
I've only two Terran SGD's, but one each of the fish and cat.
The one scenario I wanted to work out, but never got balanced, had these
monsters SO big, they couldn't maneuver on the table. They ran in straight
lines, just out of each other's main guns, with all the little ships trying to
fight them and each other.
I'd actually decided the two Terrans were NAC, the James H. Evans and the Adam
Delafield, and the Aquarian was FSE, though I'd never had a name for it.
Suggestions accepted.
Thanks for bringing the monsters up; I never liked trying to work them out
with the old arcs, and made a mental note to try FB1-style. Of course,
the mental note board is DARN crowded, and DAMN illegible.

I did one version last night -- insomnia is a pain, but it can
occasionally
be useful -- baed on a mass of 600 and an ungodly number of beam
batteries. I gave it two fighter squadrons, and a pair of MT missiles, but
other than that...nothing but beams, beams, and more beams. God help anything
that gets with 12 MU of the forward arc.
There's something really fun about designing something as over-the-top
as this. If anyone wants to see it, I'll post the SSD.

I see he had the same thought about those huge turrets. Beam 4s at least
-- those guns are the size of a scout ship!

Seems like a good training scenario for new players. "See this? Okay,
everybody: Kill it!"
> John Crimmins wrote:
Yup, they are massive. I did not convert the smaller turrets to beams
batteries on a 1-to-1 ration since the Terran minis have so many more
secondary turrets than the other races, they would have really outgunned
everyone else.

That is my Sci-Fi Crossover Enter the Executor scenario, with a Super
Star
Destroyer as the big ship (mass 1400 in 7 sections) :-)

Which SDF lacks Fighter Bays?
2 wasn't carrying fighters but then it wasn't carrying crew either.
1, 3 and the 7's all had a number of fighter bays and squadrons.
Even the new model four gun ones from Macros 2 have fighter bays.
