I wanted to share a few pictures.

Here's a Japanese cruiser on a Battletech flight base:

Here's my plan for storing spaceships:

This was a fruit box, and it came with a piece of foam that fit the box. I cut
it into three strips, then cut slits at 40cm intervals, offsetting adjacent
rows of slits. The third strip hasn't
been cut yet--it will have larger intervals for my larger
ships.

The box is pretty heavy (I'm going to tape it for reinforcement--there
is a lot of metal in it now).

Here's a picture of me slipping a figure into its slit:

Finally, here are two fighter bases. One is the GZG base with the arms. The
other is my version.

I glued a 3/8" (I think) ball onto the tip of a base, and drilled holes
in it. The heavy fighters are stuck on with the sticky stuff for putting
posters on walls. The GZG thing is pretty good, but I was thinking that I'd
like to try thinner wires leading to the fighters. (I'm using pins.) Of
course, I've got a big sphere floating in the middle, so it is a tradeoff. I
could solder the things to a wire like on my Battletech flight bases, if I
could get them to hold still in position.:)

Great pictures. Your storage box has inspired some ideas of my own.

One suggestion for your fighter bases... If you paint the arms
black and/or paint the center sphere black, then they will
draw less attention to themselves when you play on a black mat. It won't
complete hide them, but it will add to the illusion that they are floating by
themselves.

I bought some painted NAC from a friend in a small gun case, and he'd cored
some of the foam into a cylinder about the size of the ship, and cut a slot to
slide the post in. He'd only done it for the attack carrier, but I'm thinking
I may try it with more ships. Keeps 'em from sliding about but still fairly
easy to remove; have to get the foam at the level of the bottom of the post to
give the ship proper support from below, of course.

Yes, the plan is to paint them black. I just don't know whether the GZG
fighter stands (no big center, bigger posts) or mine (sphere in the center,
very thin posts) would look better. Maybe I'll try both and see.
