Ok, two questions:
1. Recently I saw a reference to scratchbuilt NSL-like ships for FT.
Can anybody point me to the right url? I can't seem to find it
anymore:-)
2. I want to try some scratchbuilding myself, but I want to keep my ships
in line with GZG-FT sizes. I do not want to restart the scale
discussion, just some ballpark figures. So what length (in cm or inches) would
a size
25/50/100/200 ship be? Something like size/20 cm? I think I saw some
measurements somewhere of a dreadnought being 100mm?
Thanks and cheers,
Hi Frits,
In answer to your questions...
1. I have no idea ;-)
2. The scale discussion and all it's permutations and convolutions reminds me
of one of my favourite lines ever in a tv show: "this is a conversation
that can only end in a gunshot..." (from Bab5 - spoken by the doctor,
no less).
I've been planning to try my hand at scratchbuilding some FT ships (and then
moulding and casting them, if they're any good) also. The absolute best,
IMveryHO, way of getting your size in line with FT ships is to look at your
custom ship design, find one that is similar (roughly so in size) from the
current GZG line (preferably one that you own already), and make your
scratchbuilt ship about the same size...
Not very "scientific" but it will work *just fine*.
And then let us all see!
Good luck,
Check the archives...this was discussed a while ago...
I think some rough sizes were:
Escort about 0.5 inch. Cruiser about 1 inch. Capitals about 1.5 inches and up.

Oh man! Forgot:
For those who are wondering...
The list archives are at:
http://www.warpfish.com/jhan/ft/Archive/index.shtml
And there is a search function...

Sort of, if you go to Altavista it never returns anything other than the front
page. It doesn't seem to have traversed the thread tree.
Google will return a subject line from the index page, nothing more.
And the search item does not search the zipped archives. So it can't find
anything prior to the current year. Although I see why they are zipped, the
last 2 years archives are about 30MB each. <8^O

I am still thinking of buying some ships... Now where is that credit card?

Hm. Not to cast any doubt over Donald Hosford's memory <g>, but compared to
the GZG models I have the above values sound *very* low. Some rough
measurements:
NSL Stroschen-class CT: TMF 14, length 22mm
NSL Waldburg-class DD: TMF 30, length 32mm
NSL Radetzky-class CE: TMF 58, length 48mm
PHC Vlath-class: TMF 11, length 14mm
PHC Dinth-class: TMF 41, length 34mm
PHC Tsaara-class: TMF 58, length 37mm
PHC Keraph-class: TMF 104, length 45mm
PHC Voth-class: TMF 250, length 88mm
There's no fixed "nominal TMF/length" ratio - which is quite natural,
since the bigger ships are almost always wider and taller than the smaller
ones rather than just longer. Similarly, the Phalon models are considerably
"fatter" than the NSL ones (at least over the rear hull) - eg., placed
side by side there's no doubt that a Keraph is much bigger than a Radetzky,
even though the Rad is longer.

Frits

Unfortunately his other website at webprovider.com has been zapped. Thanks,
Well, I did ask that very same question about 2-3 "years" ago...(a near
eternity on the web...) I don't have the emails any more, as my emailer has
compleatly crashed a couple of times since then. Personal memory does make a
lousy backup medium.
:-)
I thought those were generic (average) values given then.
It does make any scratchbuilts look somewhat near in size...
