As a tangent to the fighter discussions...
Ideas for Phalon Fighters.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Configurable Weapons: Most Phalon Fighters mount an 'ultralight pulsar'
similar to the ship-mounted version, but much smaller, like the
ship-mounted version, these can be configured to fire in different
modes, and follow the same rules for configuration (but see below).
The 3 modes are:
Multi-purpose - as a standard fighter
Anti-fighter - as an interceptor
Anti-Ship - as an attack fighter
Typical Fighters mounting these:
Nith Class (4 points each) Tuus class (heavy fighter) (6 points each)
Vaan Class (fast fighter - was called an interceptor) (5 points each)
These is also a long range version that resembles the Tuus, but is only as
resilient as the Nith.
Plasma Bolt fighters: these mount a one-shot, miniature version of the
plasma bolt launcher, either... treat these as torpedo fighters, but they only
inflict damage on a roll of 4 or 5 vs. level 1 screen, or a roll of 4 vs.
level 2 screens, they have no secondary armament (cost 5 each) or...give them
a mini plasma bolt, launched as placed ordinance, radius 1 mu (.5 mu in
vector), damage 1D6. (cost??? each) or... mini PB too small to be noticed in
FB scale, but big enough to
auto-hit - treat fighter as torp fighter, but any die roll does damage,
level 1 screen negates 6s, level 2 screen negates 5+ (cost 6-7 points)
Vapour Shroud fighters
This mount no weapons, but have a small vapour shroud gland - each
fighter can produce enough vapour to shroud 5 MASS of ship (so a full flight
can shroud 30 MASS). Can be used to shroud friendly ships if screening as if
they had a vapour shroud gland. Can shroud enemy ships, makes them harder to
hit, but blocks target
ships firecon - can be engaged by PDS, but the vapour shroud fighters
get the benefit of the shroud.
Fighters only have enough 'fuel' for 1 shroud without re-arming.
(cost??? points)
It needs some more detail (like names for some of them), but what does
everybody think?
One thing I neglected:
As an option, the Phalon Pulsar Fighters can be re-configured when they
are re-armed, should the optional rule on fighter re-arming be in use
(Fleet Book 2, page 4). This subtracts 1 from the re-arming rule, or,
optionally, 2 if re-configuring from anti-fighter to anti-ship or vice
versa.
i.e. reconfigure from multi-role to anti-fighter, roll 1D6, on a 1-2
fighter group is out of action for rest of game, on 3-6 group is
re-configured after 1 full turn.
Alternatively, use the standard re-arming rule, but add 1 turn to the
time required.
G'day,

Last one sounds like the easiest to implement (though if the first is closest
to how PBLs are normally effected by screens then go with it... sorry don't
have my FB2 stuff with me to check).
> Vapour Shroud fighters....
I take it you must have enough fighters present to match the size of the ship
before they can successfully shroud it?

actually both the 1st & 3rd options are based on the effect of screens on
plasma bolts. ATM I prefer 3 as well, as 2 is potentially a huge can of
worms :-)

Essentially yes, I did consider allowing them to 'half-shroud' a target
(effect: target gains level-1 screen protection, everything the target
fires at gains level-1 screen protection, or 6mu extra range for pulse
torps & k-guns) - but I decided to leave it out for simplicity.
G'day,
> Essentially yes, I did consider allowing them to
Do they end up being cost effective or are you still better off just buying
shrouds and have offensive fighters? Or is this a way to shroud fire from one
direction while still being able to fire out the other side?
Cheers

Cost effective - dunno?
I'm not sure what you're asking in the second question?
G'day

IF you line all the shrouding fighters up on one side of the model can the
ship still fire at targets on its other side
e.g. (warning bad ascii art follows)
Target A Target B
Fighter
Fighter
Fighter Phalon Ship
Fighter
Target A can't fire on the Phalon ship, but the Phalon ship can't fire at it
either. On the other hand target B can be fired upon, but then it can fire on
the ship too.
I was asking is this would be the case?
Thanks

Thanks, I was actually visualising the effect as the fighters flying all round
the ship to be 'shrouded', thus covering it completely, but your
version could be interesting as well - what does the list think?
