Subject: [FT] Multi-ship stands

As a direct result of not paying enough attention to what I'm doing, I've
ended up with eight small ships, of a pseudo-Dilgar design (I
think...the B5 ships that look kind of like ploughshares?), that I really
didn't want. In an effort to make the best of a bad situation, I've decided to
paint them up as a bunch of cargo ships, all with a standard paintjob and some
kind of logo on the side -- Interstellar Parcel Service, maybe?

In any case, I don't want to bother with basing them all individually, so I'm
toying with the idea of mounting them four to a base. All the ships on a
single base would have the same orders, and all would move simultaneously.
Attacks would choose which ship they were hitting, and would still use the
centerpoint of the base to determine the range.

Are there any aspects of this that I'm not considering, that would throw
things out of whack? The ships will be scenario objectives, not combatants, so
I don't think that it will matter. But even so, I'd like to know for certain
before I break out the epoxy....

A new way to "go postal" perhaps? (grin...sorry I couldn't resist...)

Moving them in groups sounds easier for large battles.

A few thoughts have come to mind:

Are you going to use little rings or markers or something to show that one (or
more) of the ships on that stand are "gone"? I saw a "horse and Musket" game
(in a magazine) where they used little plastic "wire nuts" to mark casualities
in a multi-figure stands.

What happens to the group movement when one (or more) ships (on the same
stand) have crippled engines? Does the whole group slow down?

Seems reasonable enough. This sort of thing comes under the squadron movement
option from MT, but mounting them on the one base, you don't have a rotational
problem which sometimes occurs with squadron movement.

The only consideration I can think of is what are you going to do if one ship
has it's engines suffer one or two threshold checks? As a pirate or raider
player, if I know the whole group is going to follow exactly with each other,
knocking down or out the engines of one ship would ensure my being able to
capture the entire group.

[Bri] How about Inter-stellar Trade, Transport, and Telecommunications
(ITTT)? See GZGPedia entry at
http://people.canoe.ca/jhan/ft/gzgpedia/nationsa2l/nation-ittt.html.
This unofficial corporation's buisness is transport of goods between colonies.
It was designed to provide a standard "generic" courier and cargo service for
the GZG universe. Current paint scheme is light grey base with a large green
stripe. The green stripe is trimmed with very thin bands of red on each
side. (I will provide a .gif if requested off-list).

[Bri] As others have stated there are three problems:
1) How do you measure distance to the figures? To the center of the stand? If
to the posts of the individual ships, you may run into problems as they turn.
If you measure to the center how do you resolve Salvo Missile attacks? 2) What
happens if 1 ship of the group takes damage to an engine (threshold check or
needle weapon). 3) How to mark casualties. All of the above can be handled by
house rules, but will need to be stated before the game.

Sounds good so far. But even if they were combatants, you could still do it;
just under the understanding that you limit your tactical options by "forcing"
them to act as one unit.

I was going to do something like that. They have these fins in the back, so I
could drop a ring over that. Alternatively, I could cover the dead guys with
cotton for a much more dramatic effect.

This comes under the category of "Things that I hadn't thought of",
actually....

Option one is to make them all confrom to the movement restrictions on the
damaged ship. Justify it as "Company Policy", be aware that it will give the
attackers an advantage, and see what happens.

Alternatively, I can paint up one guy on his own base, and place him out on
the board when someone gets crippled. This is probably the better idea of the
two, in retrospect.

Now I just have to figure out exactly what to do with 8 of those alien ships
from the beginning of Alien, which I also purchased yesterday.... Fortunately,
the Illuminati is a versatile bunch.
