Subject: (FT) Miniature ideas (Space Staions, planets and missile packs)

Hello all:

For a game that I am going to be running, I need a few miniatures and I was
looking for ideas on how to make them. in the Subject, you can see what I am
looking to create. Other than counters, does anyone have any ideas on how I go
about making planets, space stations and missile packs. The planet isn't that
hard, but I am looking for other ideas for it. My idea for the planet is one
of those styrofoam balls that you can get in craft shops and paint it up, but
looking for other ideas. The Space station, I am looking for inspiration for
it honestly. Once, I get a good idea what it should look like, I can start
making it. The missile packs, I am completely lost other than using counters,
but if
anyone can found/created a miniature for them, I'd love to see them.

Thanks,

For GZGECC, I used a plywood disc, 12" dia, which any hardware store should
have, then sealed it and painted. I used a spray sealer, which took forever
since the wood soaked it up. Cheap, easy to paint (once you've sealed
it),
easy to transport and store.

If you want something spherical and you have a lighting supply shop handy, you
can ask if they have acrylic lighting globes. But they can run $10, $25, or
*lots and lots* depending on how big you want.

Silent Death boxed sets (the big set with the plastic ships included) have
plastic missiles in a variety of colors.

Do you have a Star Wars micromachine Bespin Cloud City? I know a company that
uses it as the top deck to a larger station, but I've always assumed that the
stations in FTII should be point entities, same as ships. Another possibility
is the MM Space Dock.

If you want bigger, plenty of moderate priced items on eBay, from DS9's to
B5's.

Are you talking about SM counters? The plastic missles and torps out of Silent
Death come to mind, but you want something that has six missles. Take a look
at plastic cocktail toothpicks; either straight 'swords' or the
ones with clever logos can do. Cut the sharp tips off, say 1/4", and
glue half a dozen on a small base; pennies are always good.

I'll see if I can think up more...

Make it out of paper:)

I made one, you can download it here

www.germwarfare.co.uk/dsbuild.htm

If you have an idea of what you want then by all means ask me. I will have a
go at making these things to order;)

And gets powder/dust/little-static-charged-bits over everything it gets
in touch with, if you're not careful. Keep this in mind when you select a work
area, then bear in mind that you must paint it, cover it with glue, or
something.

I've created a few space stations -- still need to paint most of them,
'tho. The easy one was a pair of Micro Machines: the top section of a Cloud
City of Bespin glued onto a Star Trek Starbase. The combination looks
surprisingly good.

I also made one that took a bit more work. I started with a block of floral
foam, which is very crumbly and easy to shape. I broke into aproximately the
shape that I wanted, and then covered it with two coats of Acrylic Gel Medium
(Extra Coarse grade
-- it has little
bits of pumice in it). The result was pretty durable. I then glued on bits and
pieces of
plastic shapes and model parts -- a BFG fighter bay and antenna, some
gun turrets from a
Yamato model, some plastic domes and beads from a craft shop -- and used
more Gel Medium to blend them into the surface.

Oh, and I glued some hollow tubing into place on the underside, so I could
slide a base in and out without difficulty. The whole thing painted up pretty
nicely, and wasn't all that difficult.

I've also got hald of a Cylon Basestar, so I can duplicate the Space Station
from MT when I'm feeing ambitious enough. That won't be soon.

For missiles, you can order some nice ones from (I hate to say it) GW. From
the BFG line, and the prices aren't bad.

Finally, check out: http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/
..under "Bits and Pieces" for instructions on making planets and asteroids.

Quite true. Only the initial bit was really messy; I got some fine powder
flaking off from handling it while I was applying the gel medium, but not much
at all.

And once the medium dried, it sealed it perfectly. No problems at all.

I love the gel medium; it's so easy to work with. I use it for all of my bases
now, too.

I have a 1200th Superior Zep around here; it would have looked beautiful over
my Derflinger, if I'd ever gotten it painted. However, at about 4"
long and about 3/4" wide, solid lead alloy, it's almost as deadly as the
real thing, and doesn't seem appropriate for a missle. Even the 6000th would
make a better ship than missle, to my thoughts.

While I've 2400th ships a'plenty, and it's a better scale, with 6000th even
more so if you're on a table, you can't beat the look of a 1200th squadron in
passing.

Got a few of those laying around as well (don't ask:-)). The MT manual
says something about an old kit(this one) ans some GZG parts. Any clue what
these parts might be, the space station range or something?

Well, the top bit looks like the main section of a GF-021 (was FT 304)
on top of a large cylindrical section, which I can't identify.
