I'm writing up as-yet-unofficial stats for Islamic Fed ships and need a

Suggestion.

G'day,

Thought about using Arabic star names or names of major geographic features
for these classes?

Cheers

he difficulty with star names is that a lot of them are Arabic to begin with.
"Ruchba" and "Nihal" may be good cruiser names for another nation, but I can't
see going into battle with the "Hen's Knee" and "Camels Drinking".

I would also, ideally, like to get something which an Arab speaker might
chose. *I* wouldn't have thought they'd use Madinah, except that there's
already a ship, Sa'udi IIRC, which is named that.

What about phrases that represent Muslim ideals, philosophies, attitudes,
qualities, or concepts? Sort of like the way navies in English speaking
nations uuse names like Valiant, Defiant, Indefatigable, Reliant, Victory,
Intrepid, etc.?

So explain to me why Damascus is a "city" and Medina is a "...major
city..."?

Are you thinking major (as in Holy) inn meaning?

Can't be areal size/population (might be, it's been many years since I
was assigned to CENTCOM support functions...) surely!

You could use names of 'historic personages' for some ship classes. The Saddam
[involuntary colonist carrier] for example...

Hx, SF, and Fx: 6 mm figures, Starships and 1:6K "Wet Navy" warships are my
main interest.

Pretty much. Madinah, Mekkah, Yerushalayim, maybe Riyadh, and I run out at
about that point. One reason to give that class of names to CVA's, since there
won't be many of them.

I thought about using the names of the Caliphs, and I could just make up some
names as "the Heroes of the Revolution" but I'm not happy with
that. I also thought about angels--Jibrail, Mikail, and so forth--but
I don't know how well that would go over with a Muslim.

The concept could be slightly extended to include other cities of religious,
cultural and historical significance. Kairouan (Tunisia), Fez (Morocco),
Damascus, Baghdad (of the Caliphate), Timbuctoo,
Istambul, Cordoba, Granada (the latter two ready-made for conflict with
the FSE)

If you include Shiite Holy sites, you can add Kerbala, Najaf, Qom...

For ideas, check the actual names of Arab Navies at

Thought maybe so.

Like any other group (Hispanics, whatever-you-call-the first-Americans,
etc.) you might ask a few members of that group for feedback. Contact a local
mosque (surprisingly or not they are becoming more common in
USA/Europe) and ask clergy (Imam?) about that idea. I might ask the
Islamic coworkers if i can track them down. Heck, even the Intel Community has
islamic believers in it. Just expect answers to be 'widely divergent'!

So, anyone on the list who is of the Islamic faith themselves, or
have friends/colleagues who are and wouldn't mind being asked this
sort of thing....?

Ideally someone Egyptian or Saudi, since tthat's where the IF came from. Might
get rather different answers if you ask someone from Nigeria, Indonesia,
Paris, London, etc.

I'll admit to not having a good feel for this, but I recall being rather
surprised by the 'poetic' translation of a number of WWII IJN ship names. If
the cultural connection is proved right, I'd not rule these out.
