I don't want to step on Chris' toes, but here's a follow-up.

A) When you play one-off games, do you:

A1) Fight a battle per a pre-designed scenario;

A2) Create two fleets based on points and just slug it out;

A3) A mixture of both (build a fleet to a specific point size, and use it in a
scenario, either blind or knowing the scenario ahead of time)?

B) When you play one-off games, do you:

B1) Play to specific victory conditions (half the fleet destroyed, a certain
point value of ships destroyed, a certain scenario specific requirement);

B2) Play until one side is completely destroyed, leaves the table, or one
player resigns?

C) When you play one-off games, do you:

C1) Have some sort of morale or campaign background rule that prevents ships
from fighting to the death (the crew don't want to die, the ship has a "worth"
outside of the battle and can't just be sacrificed for no gain);

C2) Fight to the death, morale rules be darned?

A1 - For the most part it's been a scenario driven thing with preset
fleets. I remember doing one Build Your Own Fleet game outside of ECC.

B2 - Play until on side has been destroyed or decides to disengage.

C2 - Though I would like C1

When I play with Joshua (my son and only local opponent):

except that we can usually see how things are going and the losing side will
resign rather than fight to the last man. Since we usually
use IF-style ships, there usually isn't much in the way of ship
morale--normally go from "unscratched" to "vapor" in one turn.

Once I lure some of the local naval gamers into trying FT, I'll use designed
scenarios based on historical situations (i.e. translating Battle of Cape
Esperance or such)

Yes, this one..

Usually till player resigns.

Depends on the mood of the players. We've played simple clash-and-
go to till-the-last-damamge-box.
