I have a couple of Blood Hawks. Seen from above, they look pretty
much like what I want--but the wings curve down a lot, and I want
something fairly flat

Are these ships of a size useful as DS aerospace fighters?
> Are these ships of a size useful as DS aerospace fighters?
I happen to have an Epping Gunboat handy, it's about 1.5" long and 1.5" across
the wingtips, so about 37 x 37 feet in DS2 scale. (3.8x3.8cm and about 11.4
meters for you metric types)

Most of them -- the Saucer is one of my favorite VTOLs, as it happens --
but some are a good bit larger. I use 674 as a Full Thrust cargo ship, for
one.

Pity, they look rather nice in design. Some of them would be nice for FT
ships, but some of the designs have a definite aerofoil look that would be
nice.

Most of my DS2 stuff is closer in scale to modern 6mm as opposed to most SF
lines, so that's actuall better for me. The big question is how big is an
Epping compared to, say, a djinn or chupacabra?
*mutters to self* Gotta win the lottery..... Iron Crown, GZG, Irregular,
Brigade, Old Crow, CinC..... I'll take a couple dozen of each.....

In DS as fighters. Damn fat fingers.
Then again, as I've said, my scale is a bit smaller
than most -- The stuff I run as Class 4 and 5 would
pass for 3 in some people's figures. I figure as long as all my stuff's
consistent with each other, and it's at least esthetically plausible, and I
don't use it as a way to fool someone, that's a subjective call anyway.

I'm afaid I'm with John on this one.
I've seen the smallest SD, Spirit Riders(?), used as small strafing craft, and
thought they were quite fetching.
However, if you're expecting planes the size of, say, an F-14, then you
have to go to the larger end, which are termed gunboats.

The Praying Mantis image is not correct. Both Indy and I hava few Praying
Mantis figures between us and I especially like them. They have the very
pointed nose and two side bays armed with missiles.
Any sharp observer will recognize them as Sylvian destroyers. :-)
Jon is correct the Praying Mantis and Firebat images are swapped. Many of the
Nightwatch ships for SD were initially released as Traveller ships by RAFM but
then repackaged as SD fighters. I think that is where the similarity Jon is
referencing came from.
Its funny to look at that list again, I have at least 2 of every ship on
that list. I even made the master for the 707 Lillith. Though the largest of
this line is only cruiser class in size when put with the FT fleets. One of
the best ships for DS from this line IMO as a dropship was never released, the
original Sorenson III. It looked much link the dropship from the Aliens movie.
I'll just go back to lurking now

1. Thanks for the run down of sizes.
2. When you say something the size of an F-14, what
company's ground unit figures are you comparing it to? 3. I wasn't referring
to any specific fig, just the line. So some probably are useful to me.

I was making comparisons in my head to micro-armor sized F-14's, and
obviously failed miserably, if the plane's half again the 37' given
previously. I found somewhere that states an F-14 is over 60' long.
*blush*
That would make it closer to the 'Warhounds', which are a level larger than
the gunboats, though these tend to be be a bit more brick-ish, and the
Epping isn't the largest gunboat going...
I will point out that the images on the website aren't constant scale, so
you'll have to try and find other images to get sizes right.

I've seen pics of it, and I agree. In fact, I was drooling over the idea of
using it for that purpose for a while, until it became clear I'd never get my
hands on one.

Yup, they're brutes. In 1/285 or 1/300, it comes out
to about 2 1/2" for an F-14. Again, I use smallish
6mm figs - my class 4 MBT's are about the same size as
GHQ modern MBT's (I'm using CinC THK-IV's and GZG
Grav Somethings), which might make it easier to go with smallish aerospace
figs.

In terms of SHAPE, the ones that appeal to my aesthetic for Ground Attack
Aerospace units are again the Chupacabra and the Djinn, but I have no idea
what size they are.

No, that would be too easy, wouldn't it? :-P

Hey, Jim!
I'd disagree with the size issue. The Kali ship is closer to battlecruiser or
battleship size. Most of the SD "fighters" are in the escort to light cruiser
size range.

That depends upon which scale your using. From what I've been told, next to FT
minis, you may be right, but when set next to 6mm minis, maybe they were
right.
Evening Jon
I won't argue the fact, otherwise you might not let me register for the
ECC ;-)
I think this is likely truer for the older FT fleets, the newer released
fleets seem to be getting a little bigger. I don't have any of the older
fleets though. One think that the SD miniatures did have was a wide range of
ship sizes even within their ship classes.
