I haven't been playing FT long, so maybe this is a silly question, but why
WOULDN'T you fit ADFC to any vessel mounting PDS? OK, I know there's a
mass/point cost, but I think the ability of all ships in a squadron to
cooperate in area defence is worth it. The FB designs only seem to give ADFC
to "escorts" though, so maybe I'm missing something.
I haven't yet acquired any "official" ships, so I'm playing with a
home-brewed fleet based on plastic wall plugs of various sizes on flying
bases. I've been messing around with various designs, weapon fits etc., but
right from the word go I decided to give all my ships ADFC.

No reason. A lot of "design your own" ships mount ADFC plus more PDS than the
Fleet Book ships do. I suspect that when FB1 was written, no one tried a
battle where one side only brought carriers and lots of fighters.

That is the exact reasoning to me adding all ships in the fleet with ADFC. So
that even the escorts can be protected. If you target escorts with missiles or
fighters, then you can slowly pick away a fleet. But with ADFC< the oppoent
will think twice for now havig to deal with more then 1 or 2
ships...

Or versus massive numbers of SM's at slow speeds/ on a tight table. ;->=
Another question, though, is it more worthwhile to buy bays of interceptors,
and not have the points tied to particular places in the fleet. Assuming you
aren't moving the whole thing as one tight mass, of course.
Haven't cogitated on the cost analysis, mind you, as fighters ARE expensive,
and, if you use the rules, limited by endurance. However, they can concentrate
their power.

I love it! The domed ends and funky ridges could stand proudly in any episode
of Dr.Who. I tried wire connectors because I thought the 'wings' had lovely
George Pal connotations.

National doctrine and historical opponents would determine deployment of ADFC
equipment. But as you imply the ADFC should be standard kit for any fleet. I
have a SSD somewhere which sports a limited assortment of B1s, a load of PDS,
and an ADFC. I've never used it on the table but no fleet should be without
some type of AEGIS like ship in the aresenal.
