Just to let you all know - the typesetting of the Fleet Book was
finished today, and it will all be in the printers' hands as of tomorrow.
Provided they don't let us down we'll have copies at Salute on Saturday week
(25th Apr). UK price will be £7.95; it is 48 pages long, with 30 pages of
ships
(58 specific designs - all illustrated - plus 8 generic merchants etc.),
11 pages of new and updated rules and construction system and 7 pages of
background info and other stuff!
Any idea when GeoHex will get it and those of us state side will be able to
get it? I'm in need of a FT fix.....

Well, they'll be shipped from here as soon as the print run is finished
(around the end of the month, I guess - the copies I hope to have by the
25th will just be the first 100 or so off the press to take to Salute). How
long they take to reach the US depends on whether they go air or sea freight,
you'd best talk to KR about this one (and how long they'll then take to reach
the distributors and stores).

Quite a while I'm afraid. I know of two stores here in the Atlanta area that I
know carry FT,MT, Dirtside ect. I asked if they were going to get the fleet
book. Neither had heard of it and both checked their orders for the next three
months and it hasn't been ordered. I'll cross my fingers.

Reserve me a copy now! I'll pick it up at Salute.

In this day and age of electronic publishing, wouldn't it be possible to
just ship the e-files to GeoHex and let them contract with a local
printer to do the NorAm distribution? Seems to me it would cut down on the
shipping portion of the total costs, and decrease turnaround time.
I realize there may be other economic considerations involved....just another
drooling, impatient FT otaku daydream.:)

The only way to get a reasonable unit price on printing is to do as many as
possible in the same run.

What sort of print run are we talking about?
I've got an idea: how about we buy directly from the UK, with all the extra
expense of postage, and fire a separate check to Geo-Hex for their
license/distribution 'cut'.
Ok, ok, it's crazy, but we're getting pretty crazed over here. I mentioned
some of the description of the fleet book to a certain lawyer friend who has
become convinced that his FSE fleet will only become viable with the book.
*shrug* He asked if I had a 'phone number for Mr.Tuffley, I have my credit
card. You can tell him I've some fiction already written. He's looking for
good FT fiction, right?' He began to mumble about some Captain character...
The look in his eyes was scary.
The_Beast who knows this is gonna get ugly before it's through

Hm... is he a (possibly former) GW gamer...?
I think he's going to get disappointed - the Fleet Book contains design
_examples_ , but no Super-Special Characters that make each fleet
invincible unless the opponent brings his own Sky Marshal along :-7 He
will
still have to win his battles himself :-)

Depends on the product. SGII was 7500 copies, but on this you've also got the
counter sheets to consider, with large costs for diecutting formes,
laminiating, makereadies etc etc. There are also the control and quality
factors to consider.

Yumping Yiminy! Doesn't your printer store the film? What kind of press are
they using? Back when I worked for a magazine, our printer had a huge library
of stuff from previous issues. Sure, it *was* more expensive to
do separate runs, but alot of that stuff didn't have to be re-done. Or
perhaps you could ask for everything from the printer when the job is
done. Just be careful--some of it can be kind fragile.

This is true, though.

I think he means two *simultaneous* print runs, since the original poster was
asking about doing one run in the UK and one in the US, so that the US
didn't have this ~ month-long delay before getting releases.

Yes, of course the printer keeps the film - but the original question
was why couldn't the files be sent electronically to the US..... I would not
be happy sending the original print films out of the country for any reason,
anyway, so there would be the costs of a dupe set.
This discussion is getting a bit OT, so for the sake of the list let's close
it now.

If KR would be so kind as to let us yanks know what the anticipated price of
the Fleet Book will be?
Oh, okay. Sorry for the interruption.

Do to increased print costs, FT, MT and the Fleet Book will all cost $18. I am
out of stock on all these now, and this new print run will mark the
inauguration of the new prices. I will also have to boost DSII to $24, the
same price as SGII. I have held the line on pricing while the printers have
run Jon and I ragged, but I can't continue to do it.
$18!!! Why, that's outrageous!!! A REAL expansion should cost at least
$35!!!!
And the basic set should be $75 at least and not even contain everything you
need to play the ga...
Oh, man. Oh, wow, I'm sorry. Those flashbacks are killer...
