Well, I played a demo of Silent Death this GenCon. It's a fun little game and
relatively quick, but it really made me just want to so fighter comabat in the
FT universe.

I suppose some house rules could be hacked together using great deal of the FT
mechanics, but it would be nice to see a seperate game dedicated to the
subject. (and the miniatures to match of course)

I was just wondering if this had ever been considered (Jon?) or if there was
any interest for it. (anybody?)

Last time I asked I was told there were multiple ideas on the table, some for
single fighters like in SD, some for squadrons.

I'd vote for single fighters, since it should be a smaller scale game. Though
you could easily add a rule for moving in groups of six for larger battles...

All we need is 1/300 scale fighters (then you can use them with DS2 as
well) and a few 1/300 scale resin capital ships to attack. :-)

I found (and saved) a page on fighter level combat for B5 back when I bought
the EFSB. It's on geocities somewhere, but I can't pinpoint the URL, since I
haven't been able to reach geocities for some time. The rules are attributed
to Valimir (valimir@aol.com) and the person
maintaining the page is (or was) londo_mollari@geocities.com.

Basically, the fighters are treated as small ships (~4 rows of 4 hull) with 4
types of systems: weapons, fire control, engines, cockpit (Minbari also have a
jammer). There are also rules for pilot quality and more realistic fighter
movement.

I could post the rules, if people are interested, unless someone knows the URL
of that site.

Jon had a set of fighter rules called Tac Fighter (?) in an old issue of

Ragnarok.

Found it.

These are really for use with TBP. Fighter scale rules:

It's really just building fighters using standard ship construction rules &
fight as such.

With all the great FT fighter ideas that have surfaced on the list here, in a
large game, being the fighter commander makes for a great operational
challenge. Quite a lot of depth just amanageing your squadron types and load
out, getting everyone in and out, refueled turned around etc etc. During
Operation Sawmill the Humans must have put a good 20 squadrons up. That was a
lot of fun.

Yes, it has been considered, and may well happen - maybe as a
stand-alone
product, or maybe as part of another book.....

What a great idea for GZG-ECC. Make a paper-mache Jeanne D'Arc that
will cover a table. Then use Escort size ships as fighters and conduct a
battle.

I wish that I had the talent to pull it off.

I played in a SD PBEM (by Tom Mc) with vector rules and conversion of the SD
systems. We used ships as SD fighters, it worked very well indeed. So I
wouldn't buy a tactical fighter game as you can do it with whats published
already.

That PBEM game (SD fighters converted to FT ships, vector movement) was a bit
too ambitious; I actually tried to convert the SD aliens (Night Brood)
and they're very different than other races / FT forces. Mines,
tactical
warp jumps, limited number of obscuring screens and high damage / low
hit frequency weapons dominate their tactics.

I also didn't know how to use FTMAP yet, and that hindered the game.

You're too harsh - it worked fine, I played the aliens and the
conversion was spot on IMO. Very different and enjoyable.

Perhaps it could go into the back of Fleet Book 3... Have the front
section be dedicated to ships of the minor powers, and perhaps write-ups
for some of the generic miniature range, then the back section can cover the
fighter rules and provide SSD's for some standard fighters.

Now all we'll need is miniatures...

Actually, if the FT starships really are 1/2000 as advertised, that's
only 6.66 times bigger than 1/300 (unless my math is faulty). That'd
make the Jeanne D'Arc still a bit unwieldy, but anything from a corvette to a
destroyer wouldn't be unreasonable.

Hmmm... Picture, if you will...

- A huge fleet action, capital ships trading massive volleys of fire,
escorts darting this way and that trying to exploit any weakness. Fighters
flitting about in swarms around the larger ships...

- A battleship's drives are hit, and it falls away from the pack...
Boarding shuttles swarm towards it like parasites, protected by a couple of
fighter groups... The last few defending fighters fall back to protect the
crippled ship...

- Zoom in to the fighter battle, twisting turning dogfight as the
shuttles plod along towards their target... The shuttles make contact, blast
through the hull and...

- Zoom in once again to a boarding action in FMA scale, bulkhead to
bulkhead combat as marines fight their way to the bridge...

Time... Talent... Money... It's be a darn cool game though!

I'll second this. I had a great time in that game as the aliens (and swinging
