OK, got the design sequence I'll be using and the designs I'll be using up at:

http://www.angelfire.com/va/basileus/kv.html

I'm considering cutting down the armor values from double mass to 1.5xmass,
rounded DOWN. The amount of armor on the capital ships is
getting flat-out silly.

Played a couple of solitaire games in preperation for tonight's playtests with
my group.

Game 1: St.John Chrysostum Light Battleship vs. K'V Heavy Cruiser. The ships
closed at fairly high rate, and the St.John got more or less wiped out by the
Scatterguns. Ugh.

Game 2: As per 1st. St.John Chrysostum kept the range open, and maneuvered to
the K'V's flank, vainly hoping to get into side arcs (the K'V turned to keep
facing). However, the K'V took a lot of damage before getting to Scattergun
range, and then rolled poorly, so the St.John wiped it out.

Game 3: 2xK'V DD & 2x K'V FF vs. 1xDDL, 2xDDG, 1xDD, 1xCorvette. Closed at
fairly high rate of speed for K'V, Humans moved in slower. Humans opened
engagement at long range ( just under 24") and heavily damaged a FF, in return
for loosing the Corvette to the only railgun that hit. 2nd Turn of combat.
Under 12" range. DDGs fired 1 salvo ea, which were knocked out by Scatterguns.
The Imperials won initiative and destroyed a FF before it could fire. K'V
chose to fire scatterguns, doing minimal damage to the Imps (never seen so
many 1s). The Humans also crippled another Destroyer and knocked out the
bridge of the other Frigate. Turn 3 after initial salvos: Humans and K'V moved
past eachother and the Humans wiped out the K'V. The DDL did 15 points of
damage (not bad
for 8-dice volley) to the damaged KV DD, and shot up the other a
little. Game conceeded.

Comments: Medium-size ships have decisive advantage of Human ships in
one-on-one duels. Hope to fight some fleet/squadron engagements
tonight. Small ships, lacking the armor of the cruisers and not having the
firecontrols to fire scattergun and railguns both, are at grave disadvantage
to Humans, especially at longer range. K'V seem to be
all-or-nothing. If the dice favor them, they win big. If not, they
loose badly. Human fleet rolling average will still do some serious damage.
K'V have to get real close for average dice rolls to be acceptable.

Overall, seems to be balanced, except I might want to cheapen the armor but
make it only 1.5 points of armor per mass.

Very interesting AAR:

Which is what you would expect with their projectile based technology.

You may well be right about the armor rating 34 boxes does seem excessive.

Also on web site you are using completely different RG mechanic and general
weapon costings than the latest 'schoon' system, isn't
this more than slightly modified? (namely RG cost and SG mass/cost).

Ok, but the latest 'schoon' system is actually very good and the best
synthesis of the discussion to date IMO and close to the MT KV mechanic, but
fixes the "Why should I mount a class 3 when 3 class 1's are equivalent"?
Question.

I'm planning to post a summary soon so those not following the thread can use
it.

Based on the Original Schoon System. I've seen over a dozen different
mechanics for railgun, most of which I'm deleting unread. I want something
that feels like and looks like More Thrust as much as possible, yet is
consistent with the Fleet Book. Not "Gee, this looks like a fun way to make
the K'V more interesting."
